Picture the Wednesday night before Thanksgiving. The tracking page says out for delivery.
The porch is empty. By 9 PM you start wondering whether the driver comes back Thursday, and he does not.
So, does UPS deliver on Thanksgiving? For a regular Ground or Air package, no. UPS parks the whole domestic network on Thursday, November 26, 2026, and that includes pickups.
The one carve out is UPS Express Critical, an emergency freight service most of us will never touch. Everything else waits for Friday. Here is what stops, what keeps moving, and why the days around the holiday matter more than the day itself.
Does UPS Deliver on Thanksgiving Day? What the Official Schedule Says
UPS publishes its own holiday shipping schedule each year. Thanksgiving Day sits on it with the flattest wording UPS uses: no UPS pickup or delivery service.
Domestic Ground, Air, and International are all closed. Air and ocean freight closes too.
People type does UPS deliver on Thanksgiving into a search bar every November. The answer has not moved in years. UPS keeps a short closure list, and Thanksgiving shares it with Christmas Day, New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, Labor Day, and July 4.
The UPS Store is a different story. Those are franchises, and the schedule only says hours vary by location. A few open for a couple of hours Thursday morning.
Most do not. Call before you drive over, or check whether UPS is open today for any date you are unsure about.
Then there is UPS Express Critical. UPS runs it through Marken, a UPS company, around the clock every day of the year.
It is a quoted, hand carry freight service for things like medical shipments and factory parts. You arrange it by phone at 1-800-714-8779.
Honestly, it is not a workaround for you. A package already moving through Ground or Next Day Air cannot be upgraded into Express Critical. If your box was due Thursday, Friday is the real answer.
Does UPS Deliver the Day After Thanksgiving?
Yes, and in a big way. Friday, November 27, 2026 is a full working day on the UPS schedule. Drivers run routes, sort centers hum, and scheduled pickups happen.
Black Friday is one of the heaviest days on the UPS calendar. The first wave of holiday orders leaves warehouses that morning. Your Thursday package shares the truck with a lot of company.
The weekend after is the usual weekend, not a holiday extension. Saturday delivery exists, but not everywhere.
If your estimate lands on November 28, check whether UPS runs Saturday routes in your area. Sunday delivery for regular Ground is a no.
Why Your Package Feels Slow All Week, Not Just Thursday
The closure costs you one day. Volume can cost you two or three more. From the weekend before Thanksgiving through Cyber Monday, UPS runs closer to capacity than at any other point in the year.
UPS also bills shippers peak season surcharges during this stretch. Its steepest tier for 2026 kicks in the weekend before Thanksgiving and runs past Christmas.
For a typical shipper the add on is under a dollar on a Ground package and a few dollars on an air package. Big volume shippers pay far more per box.
You never see those fees on your tracking page. You see them when a seller quietly raises shipping prices around Thanksgiving week.
Or when they drop you to a slower service to eat the cost. A two day transit that slips to four with no delay message is normal in this window.

What Happens to a Package Already Out for Delivery
An out for delivery scan late Wednesday means the driver was finishing a normal Wednesday route. If the package never showed, it rode back to the building with the rest of the undelivered load.
If that same scan is still sitting there Thursday, it is stale. Nobody is driving, so nothing changes until Friday morning. Expect a fresh scan Friday and a delivery Friday or Saturday, depending on your route.

What to Do If You Are Shipping Around Thanksgiving
If it were me and the box had to land before Thursday, I would ship during the week of November 16. Thanksgiving week itself gives you Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, and the Wednesday shipments are the ones that go sideways.

If your tracking already shows a Thanksgiving Day estimate, watch it shift to Friday on its own. That is not a lost package and not worth a claim. Two business days with no scan after Friday is the point where I would start calling UPS at 1-800-742-5877.
