A Next Day Air label bought on December 31 does not get a package to anyone on January 1. That catches people every single year. It is also the cleanest way to answer does UPS deliver on New Year’s Day: it does not, for any regular shipment.
UPS puts January 1 on the same short closure list as Christmas Day and Thanksgiving. No pickups, no deliveries, no drivers on the road.
Your package is not lost, though. Here is what happens on January 1, why December 31 is its own headache, and when things move again.
Does UPS deliver on New Year’s Day? The official answer
UPS spells it out on its own holiday shipping schedule: no UPS pickup or delivery service on January 1. That covers Ground, Ground Saver, Next Day Air, 2nd Day Air, and international shipments alike.
Drivers are not dispatched, so nothing reaches a doorstep. Your tracking page usually shows no new scan all day.
The single exception is UPS Express Critical, which UPS runs through Marken, a UPS company. It operates around the clock, every day of the year, and you reach it at 1-800-714-8779. It is a quoted, hand carry freight service for urgent medical, aerospace, and industrial shipments.
If you were hoping that is a loophole for a late gift, it is not. There is no button on a normal tracking page that turns a Ground package into an Express Critical shipment.
New Year’s Eve is the day people get wrong
December 31 is not a closure. It is a reduced day, and honestly this part trips up more shippers than January 1 does.
Ground delivery does not run on New Year’s Eve. UPS delivers Air and international Air shipments only. Ground pickup is off the table as well.
Air pickups still happen, but only if you prearranged them, and UPS sets a cutoff each year. For December 31, 2026 the schedule page gives December 28, 2026 as that cutoff. Miss it and no driver is coming.
The UPS Store is franchise owned, so its December 31 hours are whatever the owner decides. Many close early. If you need a counter that afternoon, check whether UPS is open today and call the store first.

The pattern is the same every year. What changes is the calendar.
This time the closure lands on a Friday. A Ground package that would have delivered January 1 does not get another real shot until Monday, January 4, 2027.
Saturday delivery on January 2 only happens where UPS already runs Saturday routes for that service. Our piece on Saturday UPS delivery explains which service levels qualify. I would not count on it for a Ground package.
What happens to a package shipped December 30 or 31
A Ground package picked up December 30 enters the network normally and keeps moving between sort facilities. The estimated delivery date shifts on its own if it would have landed on January 1. This year that means Monday, January 4 for most Ground shipments.
A December 31 shipment is trickier. Ground pickup does not happen that day. An Air package that was prearranged still cannot deliver on January 1.
So Next Day Air picked up Wednesday, December 30 delivers Thursday. Next Day Air picked up Thursday, December 31 delivers Monday, January 4.
The exception is paid Saturday delivery in an eligible area. Sellers promising fast shipping around the new year should say that out loud to buyers.
Drop boxes, The UPS Store, and the other carriers on January 1
You can still drop a prepaid package in a UPS drop box on New Year’s Day. Nothing happens to it until the next scheduled collection, which this year is Monday, January 4. The label date does not matter, the first scan does.
UPS Customer Centers are closed on January 1. Most UPS Store locations close too, though a franchise owner can open if they want. If you are standing outside one with a box, call the number on the door before you assume anything.
Switching carriers does not help either. USPS closes for the federal holiday.
FedEx lists January 1, 2027 as closed for Express, Ground, and FedEx Office on its own holiday schedule. New Year’s Day is the one day all three take off together.
When a stalled tracking status is normal, and when it is not
Most people typing does UPS deliver on New Year’s Day into a search bar are staring at a frozen tracking page. No scan on January 1 is normal.
Nobody is working, so there is nothing to scan. The same goes for most of January 2 and 3.
Tracking should wake up Monday morning. If it is still frozen by Wednesday, January 6, that is two full business days after service resumed. That is when I would call UPS at 1-800-742-5877.
Call sooner if the last scan says exception or returned to sender. Those are not holiday artifacts, and waiting does not fix them.
Bottom line
Does UPS deliver on New Year’s Day? No, not for anything you can buy at a counter or online. January 1 is a full closure, Express Critical freight aside.
New Year’s Eve is a half day in practice. Air delivery only, Ground paused on both ends, Air pickups only if you booked by December 28. Anything caught in the gap rolls to Monday, January 4, 2027.
The holidays before this one behave a little differently. UPS treats Thanksgiving Day as a hard closure like January 1.
