There is a stubborn rumor that UPS drivers keep running routes on Christmas Day during peak season. They do not. If you are asking will UPS deliver on Christmas because a gift is cutting it close, the honest answer is no.
UPS treats Christmas Day as a full network holiday every year, unlike Christmas Eve. No residential delivery, no business delivery, no scheduled pickup anywhere in the United States.
There is one narrow and expensive exception, and it is not something a normal shopper books. December 25, 2026 falls on a Friday, which matters for what happens next.
Will UPS deliver on Christmas anywhere in the country
UPS lists Christmas Day on its official holiday shipping schedule as a day with no pickup or delivery service. That covers Ground, every level of UPS Air, and international shipments.
The UPS Store franchise locations follow their own hours. UPS’s schedule says ‘limited locations’ for December 25, which in practice means most are closed. Sorting hubs and package cars stay parked for the day.
This is not a UPS quirk. FedEx and the Postal Service both close on Christmas Day too. Checking three carriers hoping one delivers comes up empty on all three.
The one real exception: UPS Express Critical
UPS Express Critical is not a shipping option you pick at checkout. It is an emergency freight service UPS runs through its Marken division. Think organ transplant materials and urgent medical shipments.
It runs 24 hours a day, every day of the year, Christmas included. You book it by phone at 1-800-714-8779, not through the regular UPS website or app.
Pricing is quoted per shipment and priced like a charter, not a parcel. UPS does not publish a rate card for it.
For a wrapped present under the tree, this is not the tool. It exists for shipments where a missed date matters more than a disappointed relative.
What happens to a package that is already moving
A package that is in transit when Christmas Eve ends does not vanish. It sits. UPS package cars and sorting facilities go idle for the holiday.
A package scanned at a hub on December 23 or 24 typically shows no new tracking scan until UPS reopens. That gap on the tracking page is normal, not a lost package.
Peak volume in the two weeks before Christmas makes this worse in some years. Back in 2013, UPS publicly admitted its air network was overloaded on Christmas Eve. A batch of packages promised for the 24th landed after Christmas instead.
A quiet tracking page on December 24 or 25 does not automatically mean trouble. But a package already running late before the holiday is the one most likely to slip past the 26th.
December 26 and the days right after
The published 2026 schedule does not list December 26 as a restricted day. UPS is back to normal operations. The catch is that December 26, 2026 is a Saturday, and a normal UPS Saturday is not a full delivery day.
Saturday Ground delivery only runs in certain metro coverage areas. Saturday air delivery only happens if the shipper paid for it. For most packages, the first real delivery day after Christmas is Monday, December 28.
Expect delivery windows to run later than usual for a few days after that. Drivers are catching up on a full missed day plus normal volume. Many areas run extended hours through the rest of the year end period.

Does the money back guarantee still apply over Christmas
Mostly, no, and this catches people off guard. Asking will UPS deliver on Christmas with a paid guarantee does not get you a refund if it slips. The money back service guarantee has been suspended for most everyday services since 2020.
Shippers call the window from roughly October through mid January peak season. That is exactly when a refund promise matters most. It is also when it is least likely to apply.

A Ground package that shows up on December 28 instead of December 23 is not eligible for money back on its own. If you paid for a guaranteed air service and it missed the date, file a claim and name the exact service level.
When a Christmas week gap is normal, and when to actually worry
Normal: a package sitting at the same scan spot from December 24 through 27, then jumping forward once the network reopens. Also normal: a delivery estimate that shifts a day or two later during peak week. Same for a driver arriving well past your usual window on the 28th.
Worth a call: no scan update at all for more than 3 to 4 business days after UPS has clearly resumed normal operations. Also worth a call: a status that says delivered with nothing at your door. Misdelivered scans spike during high volume weeks.
Worth a call sooner: an international shipment with no customs movement a full week after the holiday. Those queues clear separately from domestic ones.

Bottom line
UPS does not run its regular network on Christmas Day. The single exception is Express Critical, an emergency freight product most households will never book.
