What is USPS Parcel Select Lightweight?
Parcel Select Lightweight was a commercial-only USPS service for packages under 16 ounces. High-volume shippers and consolidators used it to move small, light parcels by ground at a low price. Individuals never had access to it, and it was never sold at a Post Office counter.
The service was built around destination entry. Shippers trucked their parcels to a USPS processing plant or local delivery unit near the recipient, and USPS handled the final leg. The closer to the recipient the parcels entered, the lower the price.
When was Parcel Select Lightweight discontinued?
USPS eliminated Parcel Select Lightweight as part of its January 21, 2024 price change. The Postal Service told regulators the product had become redundant. In July 2023 it had already aligned Lightweight pricing with Parcel Select Destination Entry, and it then added ounce-based price steps to Parcel Select, which left nothing that Lightweight did on its own.
If you find the name in an old rate chart, a shipping software menu or an older article, it describes a service that has not been available since then.
What replaced Parcel Select Lightweight?
There is no single replacement. Where a lightweight parcel goes now depends on how the shipper hands it to USPS:
- Parcel Select (destination entry): shippers who drop parcels at a destination plant or delivery unit use Parcel Select, which now has 4, 8, 12 and 15.99-ounce price steps for packages under a pound. This is the direct successor for most former Lightweight volume.
- Commercial USPS Ground Advantage: businesses that print labels through shipping software and hand parcels to USPS locally use Ground Advantage commercial pricing. It covers packages up to 70 pounds and also has ounce-based pricing under a pound.

Parcel Select Lightweight weight limit (and today’s equivalent)
Parcel Select Lightweight only accepted parcels under 16 ounces. Anything that reached a full pound had to move as a heavier commercial service.
Today the same split still matters for price. Under Parcel Select and commercial Ground Advantage, a package under a pound is priced in ounce steps, and the moment it reaches 16 ounces it moves into pound-based pricing. Accurate weighing still saves money on light items near that line.
How it compared with other USPS services
Parcel Select Lightweight sat at the cheap, slow end of the USPS lineup. It had no delivery guarantee, no free packaging and no included insurance.
Versus Priority Mail, it was far cheaper and far slower, with no guaranteed timing.
Versus First-Class Package Service, which USPS also retired in July 2023, the big difference was eligibility. First-Class Package was open to anyone, while Lightweight required a commercial setup and destination entry.
Versus USPS Ground Advantage, which launched in July 2023, Lightweight was narrower and commercial-only. Ground Advantage is open to everyone, delivers in about 2 to 5 business days, and includes tracking and up to $100 of insurance.
Parcel Select Lightweight delivery time
Lightweight never had a guaranteed delivery time. Parcels typically arrived within about 2 to 9 business days, depending on how close to the recipient they entered the USPS network.

Pricing
Lightweight used commercial pricing that was never posted at the counter. Rates depended on weight, entry point, zone and the shipper’s volume or contract.

Tracking on lightweight commercial parcels
Lightweight parcels included USPS tracking, and so do Parcel Select and Ground Advantage parcels today. Scans on destination-entry parcels are often batched at large facilities, so long gaps between updates are normal.
