The next day with no USPS delivery is Columbus Day, Monday, October 12, 2026. Asked in full, what holidays are USPS closed on comes to eleven a year: New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King Day, Presidents Day, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas. Regular mail does not move on any of them.

After Columbus Day, the rest of 2026 brings Veterans Day on Wednesday, November 11, Thanksgiving on Thursday, November 26, and Christmas on Friday, December 25. Sundays are closed every week on top of that list.

You can look up any date with the Postal Holiday Checker.

What holidays are USPS closed in 2026 and 2027?

USPS publishes a list titled Holidays (No Mail Delivery) for 2026.

The 2027 dates below follow the federal holiday calendar from the Office of Personnel Management, because USPS has not published its own 2027 list yet.

Holiday 2026 USPS closure 2027 federal date
New Year’s Day Thursday, January 1 Friday, January 1
Martin Luther King Day Monday, January 19 Monday, January 18
Presidents Day Monday, February 16 Monday, February 15
Memorial Day Monday, May 25 Monday, May 31
Juneteenth Friday, June 19 Friday, June 18
Independence Day Saturday, July 4 Monday, July 5 (observed)
Labor Day Monday, September 7 Monday, September 6
Columbus Day Monday, October 12 Monday, October 11
Veterans Day Wednesday, November 11 Thursday, November 11
Thanksgiving Day Thursday, November 26 Thursday, November 25
Christmas Day Friday, December 25 Friday, December 24 (observed)

Treat the 2027 column as the expected pattern, not a USPS announcement. Presidents Day is called Washington’s Birthday in the federal calendar. It is the same holiday.

What happens when a holiday lands on a weekend?

The federal rule is simple. A Saturday holiday is observed on the preceding Friday for most federal employees, and a Sunday holiday is observed on the following Monday.

USPS handles this a little differently for mail. Independence Day 2026 falls on a Saturday, and USPS lists July 4 as the no delivery day. It states that Post Offices are open on Friday, July 3, and deliveries happen as normal.

Some USPS employees treat that Friday as a holiday for pay and leave only. That is a staffing rule, not a mail closure.

For 2027, July 4 is a Sunday and Christmas Day is a Saturday. The federal calendar observes those on Monday, July 5 and Friday, December 24. Watch for the USPS list before you plan around those two dates.

What days is USPS closed besides holidays?

Sundays are the other regular closure. Post Offices are generally closed on Sundays and carriers do not run regular routes, though a few services still operate. The weekend delivery guide covers what Saturday and Sunday look like in practice.

Saturday is a normal delivery day for most addresses. If a holiday falls on a Monday, your mail simply moves to Tuesday. If it falls mid week, expect a skipped day and a larger pile on the next delivery day.

Which days people expect to be holidays but are not

Several popular dates are not on the USPS list. Regular service continues on these days:

  • Easter Sunday: It falls on a Sunday, so regular delivery is already off. See whether USPS delivers on Easter for the details. Easter 2027 is March 28.
  • Good Friday: It is not on the USPS holiday list, so Post Offices follow their normal Friday schedule.
  • Christmas Eve: It is not on the USPS list. Some Post Offices close early, so check your local office hours.
  • Black Friday: It is the day after Thanksgiving and it is not on the USPS holiday list. Store hours can vary by location.

Does USPS deliver on holidays at all?

Regular mail does not move on the eleven holidays. Priority Mail Express is the exception. It is a 365 day service, and USPS describes it as 1 to 3 day delivery by 6 PM with a money back guarantee.

Sunday and holiday delivery is available in many markets for an added $12.50 fee, per the current Notice 123 price list. If you do not want to pay the premium, you can choose guaranteed delivery on the next delivery day instead. The Priority Mail Express Sunday delivery article explains the fee and how it works.

What is the next delivery day after a holiday?

The next delivery day is the next day that is not a Sunday and not on the holiday list. Here are the next four closures from October 7, 2026 and what follows them.

Closure Next regular delivery day
Columbus Day, Monday, October 12, 2026 Tuesday, October 13
Veterans Day, Wednesday, November 11, 2026 Thursday, November 12
Thanksgiving, Thursday, November 26, 2026 Friday, November 27
Christmas, Friday, December 25, 2026 Saturday, December 26

Local conditions can change a route, and holiday volume sometimes pushes delivery later in the day. The delivery date to expect is the one above, not a guarantee for a specific hour.

What changes in 2027?

The weekday shifts on most holidays. New Year’s Day moves to a Friday, Juneteenth to Friday, June 18, and Veterans Day to a Thursday. Thanksgiving is Thursday, November 25.

The two weekend cases are the ones to watch. Independence Day lands on a Sunday, so the federal observed date is Monday, July 5. Christmas lands on a Saturday, so the federal observed date is Friday, December 24.

USPS has not published its 2027 list yet. In 2026 it kept the actual Saturday date for Independence Day, so do not assume the federal observed dates will carry over to mail. Check the USPS list again once it appears.

Why the federal and USPS lists differ

The eleven holidays come from the federal calendar, and USPS follows it for its no delivery days. The two lists can still differ on weekends. OPM observes a Saturday holiday on Friday for most federal workers, while USPS keeps mail closed on the real date and gives some employees the Friday off for pay and leave.

The practical rule is to trust the USPS list for mail and Post Office counters, and the OPM list for most federal employees.

Which holidays fall on which weekday?

Five of the eleven are Monday holidays: Martin Luther King Day, Presidents Day, Memorial Day, Labor Day and Columbus Day. Thanksgiving is always a Thursday. The other five sit on fixed dates, so the weekday changes every year.

That matters for planning. A Monday closure pushes your mail to Tuesday, but a closure in the middle of the week splits the delivery rhythm. Veterans Day 2026 is a Wednesday, so expect delivery on Tuesday, none on Wednesday, and the next on Thursday.

How to tell if today is a USPS holiday

To see what holidays are USPS closed in a given year, check the date against the table above. If it appears in the 2026 column, there is no regular mail delivery and Post Office counters are closed. If the date is a Sunday, regular delivery is off too.

The edge cases are the weekend ones. July 4, 2026 is on the USPS list even though it is a Saturday. July 3 is not on it.

A closed Post Office is not the same as no delivery

Post Office counters and carrier delivery usually follow the same calendar, but they are separate things. A listed holiday means no regular mail delivery and a closed retail counter. A day that is not on the list means the carrier runs and the counter follows its normal hours.

Hours on unlisted days such as Christmas Eve are set by the local office. USPS does not publish one early close time for every Post Office. Call or check the location page for the branch you plan to visit.

How to plan around a holiday closure

  1. Find the closure date in the table and note the next delivery day from the second table.
  2. Mail early, since letters and parcels dropped off the day before a closure wait until the next collection.
  3. For a time sensitive piece, consider Priority Mail Express, which is guaranteed and can deliver on a holiday in many markets for $12.50 extra.
  4. If the holiday delivery premium is not worth it, ask for guaranteed delivery on the next delivery day instead.
  5. For a December shipment, read the Christmas shipping deadlines, because the last mailing dates come well before the closure.

Priority Mail is listed at 2 to 3 days with no money back guarantee, so a closure can add a day to what you expect. Priority Mail Express is the product with the guarantee.

Individual holiday guides

Each closure has its own quirks, such as which counters stay open and what still moves. Use the guide for the date you care about:

  • Columbus Day, the next one on the calendar.
  • Thanksgiving hours for 2026 and 2027.
  • Christmas Day and the exceptions.

Veterans Day, New Year’s Day and the other closures have their own pages in the same series. Each one covers the counter hours and what still moves that day.

Bottom line

When people ask what holidays are USPS closed, the answer is eleven. USPS stops regular delivery on those days and on Sundays.

Everything else is a normal delivery day, including Good Friday and Black Friday. Priority Mail Express is the one service that keeps running, for the $12.50 holiday fee in many markets.
