Is USPS Open on New Years Day? 2027 Closure and What Still Works

USPS is closed on New Year’s Day: Post Office counters shut on Friday, January 1, 2027, there is no regular mail delivery or collection, and only Holiday Premium Priority Mail Express moves. That settles is USPS open on New Years Day for 2027 and for every other year, because January 1 is one of the 11 postal holidays USPS lists and is fixed by federal law.

Regular service returns the next day, so the closure is a one day gap. The sections below cover what stays available, what does not, and how the days around January 1 usually look.

Is USPS open on New Years Day 2027, or closed?

USPS is closed. New Year’s Day is a federal holiday every year, and in 2027 it falls on Friday, January 1. USPS follows the federal calendar for Post Office closures, and you can confirm the date on the OPM federal holidays page.

USPS has not yet published its 2027 holiday operating schedule, and its own postal holidays list currently shows the 2026 dates. The closure itself is not in doubt, because the holiday is fixed by federal law. Details such as extended hours before the holiday usually appear in late December, so check your local Post Office then.

The last New Year’s Day was Thursday, January 1, 2026. USPS announced that Post Offices nationwide were closed that day. Mail delivery resumed on Friday, January 2, 2026, and every Post Office reopened.

What is open and closed on New Year’s Day

Most things USPS does in person or by truck stop for the day. A few services keep running. This table separates them, based on the USPS operating instructions for the 2025 to 2026 holiday period.

Service New Year’s Day status
Post Office retail counters Closed, except a facility that is normally open on this holiday
Regular mail and package delivery No delivery
Regular collection from blue boxes No scheduled collection
Holiday Premium Priority Mail Express Delivered
Self service kiosks and lobby drops Monitored to prevent overflow, mail dispatched on the first available truck
PO Box access in lobbies USPS tells offices to give customers the most access possible
Normal service Resumes the next day, January 2

Can you still mail something on January 1?

You can drop mail in a blue collection box or an open lobby drop, but it will not leave on a scheduled pickup that day. USPS instructions say employees must watch the boxes and lobby drops so they do not overflow, then send the mail out on the first available truck.

So a letter dropped on January 1 starts moving after the holiday, not on it. Treat January 2 as your real mailing day. If the deadline matters, mail it on December 31 instead.

Priority Mail Express is the product built for speed. Holiday Premium Priority Mail Express was the only delivery exception on January 1, 2026. A sender who adds Sunday or holiday delivery pays $12.50 extra under Notice 123.

Does mail get delivered on New Year’s Day?

Letters, flats and ordinary packages are not delivered on January 1. Your carrier skips the route, and the mail waits for the next delivery day. For the normal weekly pattern, see whether USPS delivers on weekends.

Do not confuse a store being open with delivery happening. A facility that is normally open on the holiday does not mean carriers are out on routes. Retail hours and delivery are separate operations.

What about online services and phone help?

Online tools such as tracking and label printing are not Post Office counters, so the closure does not by itself switch them off. USPS does not publish a list of which online services stay available on each holiday. A label you print on January 1 still has to wait for a carrier or a counter.

USPS also does not state customer service line hours for individual holidays on its contact page. Expect reduced help on the day and use the official USPS contact page to see the current options. Do not expect a live agent to be as available as on a normal weekday.

How do December 31 and January 2 look?

The day before is a working day with one possible change. In the 2025 to 2026 instructions, offices with approval could close retail windows at noon on December 31. Passport appointments were blocked from noon, and our New Year’s Eve hours guide covers that day in full.

The day after is the busy day. USPS said regular delivery would resume on January 2, 2026, with staffing adjusted for extra mail and packages. A Friday holiday also leads into a weekend, so Saturday matters next.

Worked example: planning around Friday, January 1, 2027

Say you are unsure is USPS open on New Years Day and you need to mail a bill payment and pick up a package at the counter. Both errands should happen before the holiday. Here is a simple plan.

  1. Mail the payment by Wednesday, December 30, so it is not waiting on the holiday.
  2. Collect packages by Thursday, December 31, but go early, since hours may be shorter that day.
  3. Skip the counter on Friday, January 1. Confirm nearby dates with the holiday checker linked below.
  4. Return on Saturday, January 2, 2027, if your office keeps Saturday hours, and ask staff about any held mail.

The Saturday step is a planning guess, not a published 2027 schedule. Check your branch before you travel, because branch closing times vary a lot by location.

The Postal Holiday Checker shows nearby holiday dates.

New Year’s Day dates, 2026 and 2027

Both recent years put the holiday on a weekday. The table shows what USPS did in 2026 and what to plan for in 2027.

Item 2026 2027
New Year’s Day Thursday, January 1 Friday, January 1
Post Offices Closed nationwide Expect closed, schedule not yet published
Regular delivery resumed Friday, January 2 Expect Saturday, January 2, USPS has not confirmed
Day before Wednesday, December 31 Thursday, December 31

Why a few offices may still be open

USPS instructions say retail services are unavailable except at facilities that are normally open on this holiday. That wording leaves room for a small number of locations. USPS does not publish a public list of them for each year.

Do not drive to a Post Office on January 1 expecting service. Call the branch or check its posted lobby hours first. A lit lobby with open PO Boxes does not mean the counter is staffed.

What happens to a package that arrives on the holiday?

A package that reaches your local office on January 1 waits until staff return. It does not get delivered that day unless it is Holiday Premium Priority Mail Express. Tracking may show it at the local facility until the next working day.

If you were expecting a package on January 1 and nothing came, that is normal and not a lost parcel. Give it the first two delivery days after the holiday, which in 2027 means Saturday, January 2 and Monday, January 4, before you contact USPS about a delay. Package Intercept or a redelivery request only matters once a delivery attempt has actually failed.

What if New Year’s Day lands on a weekend?

When a federal holiday falls on Saturday, most federal employees treat the preceding Friday as the holiday. That OPM rule decides which weekday counts for many federal workers. It does not by itself tell you whether a given Post Office will keep Saturday retail hours.

For a year when January 1 is a Saturday, check the USPS holiday schedule once it is published. Do not assume the Friday before is a full closure for the public.

Bottom line on the January 1 closure

Is USPS open on New Years Day? Not for counters or ordinary delivery on Friday, January 1, 2027, and only Holiday Premium Priority Mail Express is the exception. Mail early, then expect normal service the next day.
