When is the last day to ship USPS for Christmas? For delivery by Friday, December 25, 2026, the last recommended send date in the lower 48 states is Thursday, December 17 for Ground Advantage and First-Class Mail, Friday, December 18 for Priority Mail, and Saturday, December 19 for Priority Mail Express. Those are recommendations, not promises.
The dates below come from the USPS holiday shipping dates page. USPS notes that the actual delivery date may vary based on origin, destination, Post Office acceptance time and other conditions. Your own package needs a cushion on top of these dates.
When is the last day to ship USPS for Christmas in the lower 48 states?
Each date is the last day USPS suggests you hand the item over so it can arrive by December 25. Mail handed over after that date may still arrive, but USPS is no longer recommending it.
| Mail class | Last recommended send date | Day of week |
|---|---|---|
| Ground Advantage | December 17, 2026 | Thursday |
| First-Class Mail | December 17, 2026 | Thursday |
| Priority Mail | December 18, 2026 | Friday |
| Priority Mail Express | December 19, 2026 | Saturday |
Christmas Day 2026 falls on a Friday, and it is a federal holiday. Plan for delivery on or before Thursday, December 24 if the gift must be in hand for the morning of the 25th. Whether the carrier delivers that day is covered in our guide on whether USPS delivers on Christmas Day.
Last day for Priority Mail at Christmas
The last day for Priority Mail Christmas delivery is Friday, December 18, 2026. That is one day after Ground Advantage and First-Class Mail, because Priority Mail moves faster. USPS labels it a “2-3 Days” service, and it is not a guaranteed timeframe.
USPS Priority Mail for Christmas has no money back guarantee. A package mailed on December 18 can arrive after the 25th, and USPS will not refund postage for that. The built in insurance of $100 covers loss, damage or missing contents, not delay.
Priority Mail Christmas deadlines work best as a target for a package that is already packed and labeled. Volumes climb through the final two weeks before Christmas, so a Monday or Tuesday drop off in the week of December 14 gives you room. For typical transit times outside the holidays, see our Priority Mail timing guide.
Priority Mail Express and the Saturday date
Priority Mail Express has the latest cutoff, Saturday, December 19, 2026. It is the only one of these classes with a money back guarantee, and the guarantee window is 365 days. USPS describes it as 1 to 3 day delivery by 6 PM.
The service offers Sunday and holiday delivery in many markets for an added $12.50. A package sent on Saturday, December 19 could reach a recipient on Sunday, December 20 where that option exists. Details are in our Priority Mail Express Sunday delivery article.
USPS does not publish a separate rule on the holiday fee for delivery on December 25 itself. Treat Christmas Day delivery as uncertain and aim for the 24th.
Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico and territories
Packages to Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico and U.S. territories have one earlier date. Ground Advantage must go by Wednesday, December 16, 2026, a day sooner than the lower 48.
| Mail class | Last recommended send date |
|---|---|
| Ground Advantage | Wednesday, December 16 |
| First-Class Mail | Thursday, December 17 |
| Priority Mail | Friday, December 18 |
| Priority Mail Express | Saturday, December 19 |
The other three classes match the lower 48 dates. Mail between the mainland and Puerto Rico needs no customs form, which saves a step at the counter.
Military mail to APO, FPO and DPO addresses
Military addresses have the earliest deadlines of all. Ground Advantage must be sent by Wednesday, November 4, 2026, and that date applies to all ZIP Codes. First-Class Mail and Priority Mail must go by Wednesday, December 9.
Priority Mail Express Military Service has a date of Wednesday, December 16, but only for selected addresses.
It is not available for AE 093 addresses. USPS also stopped processing refund requests for guaranteed service on Priority Mail Express Military items as of August 2023. Customs forms and packing rules are in our APO FPO DPO shipping guide.
International Christmas mailing dates
International mail needs the most lead time. First-Class Package International Service and Priority Mail International share a date of Wednesday, December 9, 2026. Priority Mail Express International is Wednesday, December 16.
USPS lists these dates for every region it covers, including Canada, Mexico, Europe, Asia and the Pacific. Customs processing in the destination country is outside USPS control, so a gift to a distant country should leave well before the deadline.
Worked examples for common gift packages
A sweater going from Ohio to Texas is a 2 pound package. If you want the cheaper tier, Ground Advantage must be handed over by Thursday, December 17, 2026. Priority Mail gives you until Friday, December 18, and Priority Mail Express until Saturday, December 19.
A box of cookies from California to Hawaii has the earlier Ground Advantage date of Wednesday, December 16. If you drop it on the 16th, you are betting on the recommended date with no cushion, so Priority Mail is the safer pick. Perishable food travels badly on slow routes, so choose speed for anything that spoils.
A care package to a soldier at an APO address is a different timeline entirely. Under the Ground Advantage date of November 4, 2026, it would need to leave the first week of November. Waiting until December means Priority Mail by December 9 at the latest.
Smart steps to protect a holiday package
A few habits cut the risk on any class, and they cost nothing.
- Print or write the full address, including the ZIP Code, and put a copy inside the box.
- Keep your tracking receipt, because standard USPS tracking is kept for 120 days.
- Use the free package pickup for Ground Advantage to skip the line, but schedule it before the cutoff, not on it.
- Ask the clerk at the counter for the expected delivery date for your exact ZIP Code pair.
Insurance matters too. Ground Advantage and Priority Mail include $100 of coverage for loss, damage or missing contents. If the gift is worth more, ask about added coverage at the counter, since delay is never covered by insurance.
Cards and letters: what to mail and when
For cards, when is the last day to ship USPS for Christmas? Holiday cards travel as First-Class Mail, so the December 17 date applies. In practice, mail cards by the first week of December and you avoid the rush.
A Forever stamp is $0.82 for a one ounce letter. A thick or lumpy card, or one over one ounce, needs more postage. Seasonal designs are covered in our guide to buying Christmas stamps.
What to do if you miss the date
If you pass the recommended date for your class, you have three options.
- Upgrade to Priority Mail Express if the date is still December 19 or earlier. It is the only USPS option with a money back guarantee.
- Check the Sunday and holiday delivery add on of $12.50 at the Post Office counter. It applies in many markets, not all.
- Send a gift card or a printed note, and ship the physical item right after Christmas.
Each option has a tradeoff in cost or timing. Ask the clerk for the expected delivery date at the counter, since the date depends on the ZIP Code pair. You can also run the route through the delivery time estimator before you commit.
Checking dates beyond the post office
These dates cover USPS only. UPS, FedEx and DHL publish their own schedules, and our holiday shipping deadlines roundup lines them up in one place. A package that ships on one carrier’s last day will not match another carrier’s date.
For a quick look at which days USPS is closed, use the postal holiday checker. Christmas Eve service has its own article, and Christmas Day has another.
Bottom line for Christmas 2026 shipping
On the question of when is the last day to ship USPS for Christmas, the lower 48 cutoffs run from December 17 to December 19, but the safe plan is to ship earlier than any of them. Military and international packages need weeks, not days. If a package is late, only Priority Mail Express carries a money back guarantee.
