Is UPS open on MLK Day? Not for regular service, since UPS ran no pickup or delivery for Ground or Air shipments on Monday, January 19, 2026. The next MLK Day is Monday, January 18, 2027, and UPS has not published its 2027 holiday schedule yet.
The closure covers standard routes, not every UPS service. A few things keep running, and your package simply waits for the next business day. The sections below show what stops and how to plan around it.
Is UPS open on MLK Day 2026?
UPS lists MLK Day, January 19, 2026, as a UPS holiday with no pickup or delivery service. That covers Ground, Domestic, Air and International. Drivers do not run standard routes, and scheduled pickups do not happen.
The Office of Personnel Management lists MLK Day as a federal holiday on the third Monday of January. UPS treats it as a full closure for regular services, just like Memorial Day, Labor Day and Thanksgiving. Columbus Day is the odd one out, and UPS stays open for it under the name Indigenous Peoples’ Day.
What UPS did on MLK Day, service by service
| Service | MLK Day, January 19, 2026 |
|---|---|
| UPS Ground and Domestic | Closed, no pickup or delivery |
| UPS Air and International | Closed, no pickup or delivery |
| UPS Express Critical | Available |
| The UPS Store | May be closed, limited locations open |
The table follows the UPS 2026 holiday operations schedule, which is the official answer to is UPS open on MLK Day. The first two rows decide whether your box moves. The last two are the exceptions people ask about most.
Is UPS closed on Martin Luther King Day for urgent freight too?
Only UPS Express Critical keeps going. UPS says this service, provided by Marken, is available 24 hours a day, every day of the year. You can reach it at 1-800-714-8779 or through marken.com.
It is built for emergency freight and priced to match, so it rarely suits an ordinary parcel. A normal Next Day Air or 2nd Day Air shipment still waits for the closure to end. You can see how that service works in our explainer on UPS Next Day Air.
The slower air option follows the same closure. Our guide to UPS 2nd Day Air explains what it covers.
Is the UPS Store open on MLK Day?
It may be, but do not count on it when you ask whether UPS is open on MLK Day for drop offs. UPS says Store locations may be closed on its holidays and tells customers to check with their local store for hours. The UPS 2026 operations schedule marks The UPS Store as “Limited Locations” on every closed holiday, including January 19.
Each UPS Store is locally owned and operated, so hours are set store by store. The holiday schedule does not list them. Call ahead before you drive over.
Our guide to whether the UPS Store is open today covers how to check.
One catch matters if you plan to drop a package at a Store that is open. UPS itself does not pick up that day, so the box will not enter the network until the next business day.
What happens to your package around MLK Day
A package already in the network simply pauses over the holiday. Movement resumes on the next business day, which was Tuesday, January 20, 2026, and tracking tends to show no new scans until then.
People often ask whether UPS is closed on Jan 20. The holiday was January 19 in 2026, so Tuesday was the first working day. The date moves every year.
Count on the closure costing one business day. A Friday shipment that would normally arrive Monday lands Tuesday instead, and UPS publishes no service by service delay rule for the holiday, so Tuesday is the earliest realistic date.
What to do if your shipment lands on MLK weekend
- Ship early. Send the package by Thursday or Friday before the holiday if you want it moving before the long weekend.
- Do not schedule a pickup for the holiday. Book it for the business day before or after, because UPS runs no pickups that day.
- Add a day to any deadline. Run your dates through the Delivery Time Estimator to see how a Monday closure shifts an arrival.
- Check tracking Tuesday. Movement should resume once regular routes start again.
How FedEx and USPS compare on MLK Day
FedEx does not match UPS here. For January 19, 2026, FedEx listed Express as Modified Service and FedEx Office as open. FedEx does not define modified service and says its schedule can change.
USPS lists January 19, 2026 as one of its eleven postal holidays with no mail service, so post offices and regular mail delivery stop the same day UPS does. For any carrier, the Postal Holiday Checker confirms a date before you plan a drop off or delivery.
Other UPS holidays follow their own rules. See how it works for Presidents Day.
The fall federal holiday has its own answer in our Veterans Day guide.
