Signing for a UPS package online does not mean drawing your signature on a screen. Almost everyone searching for it expects a signature pad. UPS never built one for regular packages.

What UPS offers instead is a release authorization. You tell UPS ahead of time that the driver may leave your package. The driver then skips the signature step.

Once that clicks, how to sign for ups package online stops being confusing. It is a two minute setting inside a free account.

Below is the exact method. I also cover which packages it will not work on, and where the setting gets ignored in real life.

What ‘Signing Online’ for UPS Really Means

UPS calls the feature Authorize Shipment Release. It lives inside your free UPS My Choice account, and nowhere else.

There is no separate tool with its own page on ups.com. I went looking for one and every guessed address came back as a dead page.

Think of it as a note taped to your door. You pre approve the driver to leave the box, and there is no live signature moment at all.

How to Authorize Shipment Release in My Choice

Here is the path, step by step.

  • Create or log into your free UPS My Choice account on ups.com.
  • Open the tracking details for the package, or go to your delivery preferences.
  • Turn on release authorization.
  • Pick the spot you want it left, such as the front porch or a side door.
  • Save it before the driver reaches your stop that day.

It will not change a delivery already in progress. UPS confirms that My Choice members can authorize release of their packages. You can also name where at the address the box should go.

Leaving it with a neighbor is an option too. Same screen.

One catch bites people later. Turn it on as a general preference and it stays on for future deliveries too. Use the per package option when you only want it for one order.

Using the InfoNotice Number Instead

If the driver already tried once, you have a paper delivery notice with an InfoNotice number printed on it. That number works like a tracking number.

The old school method still works. UPS’s own instructions say you can sign the delivery notice and place it back where the driver left it. The driver then leaves the package on the next attempt.

The online version is the same idea. Look up the InfoNotice number on the UPS tracking page and adjust the delivery preferences from there.

That is the second answer to how to sign for ups package online. No account needed.

If it were me, I would still open a My Choice account. The InfoNotice route only helps after a missed attempt, and by then you have already lost a day.

Which Packages Do Not Qualify

This is where most of the frustration with how to sign for ups package online starts. Some packages cannot be released no matter what setting you flip.

Situation Can you release it online
Standard package, no special service Yes, usually
Adult Signature Required (21+) No, ID from an eligible adult is still required
Shipper marked it signature required No, the shipper’s setting overrides yours
Redirected to a UPS Access Point Usually no, pickup in person is required
High value or fragile item flagged by shipper Often no, shippers commonly add signature service

UPS says plainly that adult signature packages cannot be released this way. A shipper’s own restrictions, or an Access Point redirect, get printed right on the InfoNotice.

Either one blocks release entirely. There is no override on your end.

UPS does not publish a dollar value where a signature becomes mandatory. The shipper decides that per package. If you are the one shipping and want your buyer to release it, skip the signature service.

What Happens After You Release the Package

The driver leaves it at the spot you picked and moves on. UPS normally logs photo proof of delivery. It shows up in the confirmation email and on your My Choice dashboard.

The tradeoff deserves a plain statement. Once you tell UPS to leave a box without a signature, you accept it as delivered the moment it hits your porch.

If it walks off after that, the protection a signature would have given you is gone. UPS does not spell out its liability in plain words on its public pages, which honestly tells you enough.

For an expensive item, I would leave this setting off. For a book order or a phone case, it is a fair trade for not sitting home all afternoon.

When the Setting Gets Ignored

Here is the gap between the policy and the porch. Plenty of people set release authorization online and still get a knock, or still see a missed attempt logged.

This happens most on anything the shipper flagged for a signature. The driver’s handheld will not let the stop close without a scan, so your account setting loses.

The reverse happens too. Drivers sometimes leave a package that was supposed to need a signature. Great, until it is your $900 laptop sitting in the rain.

If a package that should qualify keeps getting skipped, a phone call beats resetting the same preference a third time.

What to Do if Online Release Is Not Working

Check the package details for a signature requirement flag first. Do that before assuming My Choice is broken.

If it should qualify and keeps failing, call UPS at 1-800-742-5877. Have your tracking or InfoNotice number ready.

You can also reroute the package to a UPS Access Point and pick it up with ID. Not sure what an Access Point is? We explain it in our rundown of UPS Access Points.

If the box needs to go somewhere else entirely, our guide on changing a UPS delivery address covers that separate process. Would rather grab it yourself today? See picking up a package directly from UPS for the will call steps.

Timing matters for all of this. Run the route through our delivery time estimator so your release setting is saved before the delivery day, not after.

Bottom Line

How to sign for ups package online means turning on Authorize Shipment Release inside a free UPS My Choice account. The InfoNotice number from a paper notice does the same job after a missed attempt.

It works for ordinary packages. It fails the moment a shipper attaches a signature requirement, and that override wins every time.

If your package qualifies but keeps landing somewhere odd, check whether UPS will put a package in your mailbox. That mix up causes a lot of the same confusion.

Shipping with FedEx instead? The process differs enough to deserve its own look at how to sign for a FedEx package online.
