Anyone who asks is FedEx open on New Year’s Eve gets a yes with limits. FedEx lists Thursday, December 31, 2026 as Modified Service and FedEx Office as Modified Hours, while Friday, January 1, 2027 is Closed for both. Early cutoffs are what catch people out.
The rest of this page covers what Modified Service means, what to expect at FedEx Office counters and drop boxes, and how the days around December 31 look. Delivery is a separate question from store hours, and it gets its own short section below.
Is FedEx open on New Year’s Eve 2026?
FedEx treats December 31, 2026 as a working day with changes. Its 2026 holiday operations schedule marks the day as Modified Service for FedEx and Modified Hours for FedEx Office. Nothing on that schedule says the day is closed.
The closure comes the next day. Both FedEx and FedEx Office are listed as Closed on January 1, 2027, and the details are on the New Year’s Day closure and hours page.
What Modified Service means on December 31
FedEx defines Modified Service in a footnote with two statements.
The first reads: “Early on-call pickups and drop box pickups (including Drop Box closures) in some areas.”
The second reads: “Modified Ground pickups on Dec. 24 and Dec. 31.”
In plain terms, the network still runs, but pickup times move earlier. Some drop boxes may be closed, and Ground pickups are changed on December 31. FedEx does not publish a single new cutoff time for every area, so the time that applies to you depends on your location.
What changes for pickups
- On call pickups you scheduled may happen earlier than a normal day.
- Some drop boxes may be closed, and others may be emptied earlier.
- Ground pickups follow a modified schedule on December 31.
If a package must move before the year ends, book the pickup early and confirm the time. The steps are in the guide on how to schedule a FedEx pickup.
FedEx Office hours on December 31
FedEx Office uses its own wording. Its footnote says: “FedEx Office locations will have modified hours the day before the holiday, with some locations closing early. Please contact your local FedEx Office location for details.”
That means a store near you may close earlier than its usual time, and another may keep normal hours. FedEx does not publish one closing time for every store. Check the hours on the location page for your store before you go.
The same pattern applies to the day before Christmas. For a comparison, see FedEx hours on Christmas Eve.
What is open and what is closed
| Item | Thursday, Dec 31, 2026 | Friday, Jan 1, 2027 |
|---|---|---|
| FedEx network | Modified Service | Closed |
| FedEx Office | Modified Hours | Closed |
| Pickups and drop boxes | Earlier on call pickups and drop box pickups in some areas | Closed |
| Ground pickups | Modified pickups on Dec 31 | Closed |
| Store closing time | Some locations close early | Closed |
| FedEx Custom Critical | Open | Open |
| FedEx Logistics | Open | Closed, with border clearance exceptions |
The last two rows cover units most households never use. FedEx Custom Critical, the expedited freight arm, is listed as Open on both dates. FedEx Logistics is Open on December 31 and Closed on January 1, with a note that customs clearance at US to Canada land border crossings is available 24 hours a day, every day, subject to Customs and Border Protection availability.
What to do before you head out
- Open the location page for your FedEx Office store and read the hours listed for December 31.
- Print or prepare labels ahead of time so the counter visit is quick.
- Drop your package off earlier in the day rather than near closing time.
- If you use a drop box, check whether it is listed as closed in your area.
- Keep your receipt or tracking number as proof of the drop off.
A package handed over late on December 31 may not move until the next operating day. Because January 1 is Closed, that next day is later than most people expect.
A worked example for a December 31 drop off
Say you want a package in FedEx hands before the year ends. You check your store page on Tuesday, December 29, and it shows an early close on the 31st. You decide to go on Wednesday, December 30, when no holiday change is listed.
That choice avoids two risks at once. The first is a closed drop box on the 31st, and the second is a counter that shuts before you arrive. Anyone who waits until the evening of December 31 may find the box already emptied.
Who should plan around the early changes
Small businesses that close their books at year end often ship invoices, returns and supplies on the last weekday. Those shippers feel Modified Service most. A scheduled on call pickup that comes early can leave a late packed box on the dock.
Individuals have an easier path. A holiday return, a gift or a paperwork envelope can go in on the 30th or the morning of the 31st. If you are asking whether is fedex open on new year’s eve because a deadline is tied to the date, treat the early hours as the real deadline.
Customer service and online tools
The FedEx schedule is about operations, and it does not list phone support hours for December 31. For that reason, do not plan around a call that has to be answered late in the day. Start early if you need help with a shipment.
Online tools do not depend on a store counter. You can still create a shipment, print a label and check tracking on fedex.com, and the FedEx 2026 holiday operations schedule is the page that owns the dates. Online access does not mean a truck will collect the package on a closed day.
Does FedEx deliver on December 31?
Store hours and deliveries are different things. A counter that is open does not prove a courier will deliver that day, and a delivery does not mean you can walk into a store. The separate page on whether FedEx delivers on New Year’s Eve covers that question.
The days before and after December 31
December 30, 2026 is not listed as a holiday on the schedule, so FedEx treats it as a normal business day. FedEx business days run Monday to Friday, except Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day. The full list is explained in the guide to FedEx business days.
Friday, January 1, 2027 is Closed. The first full normal day after that is the weekend, so the next regular weekday for most business shipping is Monday, January 4, 2027. Home delivery runs on a different schedule than Ground to businesses, so check your service before you count days.
FedEx Office stores are also Closed on January 1. If you need a counter, print job or notary visit, plan for December 30 or December 31 morning instead. The page on what FedEx Office offers lists the services you can expect at a store.
New Year’s Eve 2027
The next New Year’s Eve after this one falls on Friday, December 31, 2027. Because January 1, 2028 is a Saturday, the federal government observes New Year’s Day on Friday, December 31, 2027 under the OPM listing for 2028.
FedEx has not published its 2027 holiday schedule yet. Whether FedEx will treat December 31, 2027 as closed, modified or normal is not known, so check its schedule when it appears. You can compare carriers and dates with the Postal Holiday Checker.
The general overview of closures through the year is on the FedEx holidays page.
Bottom line on FedEx and New Year’s Eve
So, is FedEx open on New Year’s Eve? Yes, as FedEx runs on December 31, 2026, but with earlier pickups, some drop box closures and shorter hours at some FedEx Office stores. It stops completely on January 1, 2027, so plan to drop off early on the 31st, confirm your store hours, and treat the following Monday as the next normal shipping day.
