Is FedEx open on New Years Day 2027? Service by service
FedEx splits its holiday schedule into four columns. Each one behaves differently, so check the one that matches what you need.

Is FedEx closed on New Year’s Day for pickups and deliveries?
Yes. FedEx treats New Year’s Day as a non business day, so there are no scheduled pickups or deliveries for the regular FedEx network. FedEx counts business days as Monday through Friday, except Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day.

Is FedEx Office open on New Year’s Day?
No. FedEx Office is listed as closed on January 1, 2027. That covers the counter, the print and ship desk and in store drop off at FedEx Office locations.
The day before is different. On December 31, 2026, FedEx Office is on modified hours. The schedule notes that some locations close early and some may be closed, so call the specific store before you go.
What about drop boxes and self service options?
FedEx does not say in the schedule that drop boxes are emptied on January 1. Because regular FedEx service is closed, plan as if nothing is collected that day. A package left in a drop box on January 1 will most likely be picked up on the next business day.
On a normal day FedEx says drop boxes are typically emptied between 3:30 p.m. and 6 p.m., with the exact time printed on each box. That printed time is the one to beat on December 31, when the schedule warns of early pickups.
The modified service footnote also matters on New Year’s Eve. It describes early on call pickups and drop box pickups in some areas, including drop box closures. Pickup times on December 31 may therefore be earlier than usual.
- Do not count on a drop box being emptied on January 1, 2027.
- On December 31, 2026, drop off earlier in the day when you can.
- Confirm the drop box pickup time posted on the box or at the location.
Is FedEx customer service open on New Year’s Day?
FedEx does not publish holiday hours for its phone lines, so plan to use the online tools. The FedEx customer support page lists tracking, Delivery Manager, FAQs, claims, returns and pickup scheduling as self service options. Email, chat and “Ask FedEx” are also listed.
Online tools show scan history even when no trucks are running. Expect no new movement for most packages on January 1. That is normal, not a sign of a problem.
What still works on January 1?
Several things continue even when the network is closed. Each of them is useful for planning around the holiday.
- Tracking: you can look up any shipment online at any time, but expect no new scans.
- Scheduling: you can book a pickup or print a label online for the next open day.
- Custom Critical: this time definite, high priority service is listed as open for urgent freight.
- Delivery Manager: you can adjust where and when a package arrives before it ships out again.
Keep the scope of each tool in mind. A website that accepts a pickup request is not the same as a driver arriving on a closed day.
How do December 31 and January 2 look?
Thursday, December 31, 2026 is a modified service day for FedEx. The schedule describes it as early on call pickups and drop box pickups in some areas. A second version of the footnote adds modified Ground pickups on December 24 and December 31.
Saturday, January 2, 2027 is the day after the closure. FedEx has not published a service by service answer for that Saturday.
FedEx Home Delivery runs every day including weekends, and FedEx Ground to businesses runs Monday through Friday. Read FedEx weekend delivery before you count on a Saturday arrival.
Worked example
Say you ship a Ground package on Wednesday, December 30, 2026. December 31 is a modified day, January 1 is closed, and January 2 is a Saturday. Count Monday, January 4 as the next business day, and build in at least one extra day.
How did 2026 compare?
New Year’s Day 2026 fell on Thursday, January 1, a federal holiday under the OPM calendar. The 2026 schedule PDF starts after that date, but FedEx names New Year’s Day among the six days it never counts as business days, so regular pickups and deliveries did not run then either. The 2027 date is also a federal holiday on Friday, January 1, so no weekend observed shift applies.

What counts as a New Year’s Day shipping deadline?
FedEx delivery commitments count business days only. A package sent on Wednesday, December 30 with a two business day commitment does not land on January 1. The clock skips the closed day.
That affects tax documents, contracts and gifts that must arrive by a date. Choose a service that finishes before December 31 or accept a Monday, January 4 arrival.
So, is FedEx open on New Years Day for anything time sensitive? Only through Custom Critical, so set deadlines for December 30 or earlier.
Does a closed day affect returns and label printing?
You can still print a label online on January 1, but nobody will take the package that day. The return window clock on the retailer’s side keeps running. Drop the package off on the next open day and keep the receipt or scan as proof of the date.
If a package is held at a FedEx Office, the store is closed on January 1, so pickup waits until it reopens. Hold at Location is available for up to 7 days.
How to plan around the closure
- Ship by Wednesday, December 30, 2026 if you want the package moving before the break.
- Drop off at a FedEx Office early on December 31, after calling to confirm modified hours.
- Use tracking to confirm the last scan before January 1.
- Expect the next pickup or delivery on the next business day, Monday, January 4, 2027, unless Home Delivery or a Saturday option applies.
