Does USPS Deliver on New Years Day? 2027 Answer and Exceptions

No, USPS does not deliver regular mail or packages on New Year’s Day, so does USPS deliver on New Years Day is a clear no for letters, Ground Advantage and Priority Mail. The next date is Friday, January 1, 2027, and Priority Mail Express is the only service with a holiday delivery option, which costs extra.

USPS has not posted a holiday list for 2027 yet. Its 2026 list names New Year’s Day as a day when mail service does not operate. The date is a fixed federal holiday, so plan around a closure.

Does USPS deliver on New Years Day 2027?

January 1, 2027 falls on a Friday, and the federal government observes it that day. USPS publishes its holiday list each year on its holidays and events page. The 2027 version is not out yet, so check it in the fall before you ship.

In 2026 the date was Thursday, January 1. The same rule applied. There was no regular delivery and no regular pickup from blue boxes.

Year Day of week Regular USPS delivery
2026 Thursday, January 1 None, listed as a no service day
2027 Friday, January 1 Expect none; USPS has not posted its 2027 list

Which USPS services run on January 1?

Most services follow the regular mail stream, and that stream stops on holidays. The table shows what to expect service by service.

Service or activity New Year’s Day status
Letters, flats and First-Class Mail No delivery
Ground Advantage and Priority Mail No delivery; tracking moves again the next delivery day
Media Mail and Library Mail No delivery
Priority Mail Express Delivery only where holiday service is offered, for a $12.50 premium
Blue collection boxes No regular pickup, so mail dropped that day waits
Home package pickup Not a regular service on a no service day
Post Office counters Treat as closed; counter hours are covered separately

An open Post Office is not proof of delivery. A store and a letter carrier are separate operations. The Is USPS open on New Years Day article covers counter hours on their own.

How does Priority Mail Express handle the holiday?

USPS describes Priority Mail Express as a seven day a week service, 365 days a year, with limited exceptions. It also says Sunday and holiday delivery is available in many major markets for an additional fee. In the July 12, 2026 price list that fee is $12.50 per piece.

You can skip that fee. The Domestic Mail Manual lets customers who do not want holiday delivery pick guaranteed delivery on the next delivery day instead. Hold for Pickup also avoids it, and USPS holds the item for 5 postal business days.

USPS does not publish a January 1 rule for Priority Mail Express beyond the “limited exceptions” wording. Treat holiday delivery as dependent on your market. Confirm it at the counter before you pay.

Here is the cost. A Priority Mail Express Flat Rate Envelope is $35.90 at retail in the July 12, 2026 price list, and the holiday premium brings it to $48.40. Our guide to Priority Mail Express Sunday delivery explains how the premium works.

What is the next delivery day after January 1, 2027?

Once does USPS deliver on New Years Day 2027 is settled as a no, the day after is what counts. USPS counts Saturday as a delivery day, so the next regular delivery day after Friday, January 1, 2027 is Saturday, January 2, 2027. Items held back by the holiday should move that day.

Heavy volume after the holidays can push some items to Monday, January 4. Carriers skip the holiday, and the backlog arrives with the next route. The weekend delivery schedule shows how Saturday and Sunday work.

A worked example

Date What happens to a Ground Advantage parcel
Wednesday, Dec 30, 2026 Parcel is scanned at the local Post Office and loaded for delivery
Thursday, Dec 31, 2026 Last regular delivery day before the holiday
Friday, Jan 1, 2027 No delivery; tracking shows no new scan
Saturday, Jan 2, 2027 Next regular delivery day; most held parcels go out
Monday, Jan 4, 2027 Fallback if the Saturday route was too full

How does the holiday change tracking dates?

Expect a one day shift for most packages, which is the practical effect of the holiday on tracking. A parcel that showed Friday, January 1 as its date will usually show Saturday, January 2 once the holiday is counted. The new date often appears after the first scan on the next working day.

A package due on New Year’s Day with no scan on January 2 is not lost yet. Give it until the end of the next delivery day before you act.

  1. Check USPS Tracking for a new expected date.
  2. If the status says “In Transit, Arriving Late,” wait one more delivery day.
  3. If nothing moves after that, open the USPS Missing Mail search page.

USPS says you can request a Missing Mail search starting 7 days from mailing. Insurance claims must be filed no later than 60 days from mailing. Have both addresses, a description of the contents, your tracking number and photos ready.

What if a Priority Mail Express package was due on January 1?

Priority Mail Express carries a money back guarantee, and an attempted delivery scan counts as meeting the commitment. If your package was guaranteed for the holiday and no delivery or attempt was recorded, you can request a refund of the postage and, if you bought it, the Sunday or holiday premium fee.

USPS says refund claims go in within 30 days, or within 60 days when extra services were bought. Refunds are denied for shipments to or from Alaska or Hawaii, and the FAQ lists other exceptions. A signature for proof of delivery is available on request, and Priority Mail Express includes up to $100 insurance.

Does Informed Delivery show mail on January 1?

No. Informed Delivery shows grayscale images of the address side of letter size mail that ran through automated equipment. USPS says it sends no images on Sundays or federal holidays.

A blank digest on January 1 is normal. It does not mean mail is missing.

Can you change a delivery that lands on the holiday?

Yes, within limits. Package Intercept costs $19.45 per piece and works for domestic mail only. It is meant for a parcel you sent that you now want back or redirected.

If you want USPS to collect an outgoing package, Pickup on Demand costs $26.50 per pickup. Neither service gives you a pickup on the holiday itself. Book the pickup for January 2 or later.

Tracking history is also worth saving. Standard USPS Tracking records are kept 120 days, and Priority Mail Express records are kept 2 years. That gives you time to file a claim if a holiday delay turns into a loss.

Does USPS work on New Years Day for anything else?

Not in the ordinary sense, because does USPS work on New Years Day is answered by the same list. USPS lists the date as a no service day for mail. It does not publish a separate list of exceptions beyond Priority Mail Express, so a notice on your tracking page outranks any guess.

Window service and delivery are different questions, and neither is confirmed for 2027 until USPS posts its schedule. Rural and contract routes are no different, because USPS lists no such exception. Recheck in December rather than guessing from a past year.

What should you ship before the holiday?

Collection stops, so mail you want moving before January 1 should go into a box or a counter by December 31. The New Years Eve hours article explains what closes early.

The holiday before it follows the same logic, as shown in Christmas Day delivery.

Labor Day works the same way, and Labor Day delivery explains it.

If your item travels with a private carrier, its schedule is separate. The UPS New Years Day schedule has those details.

Bottom line

Does USPS deliver on New Years Day? Not for regular mail, so plan for a quiet mailbox on Friday, January 1, 2027. Regular letters and parcels wait for Saturday, January 2, and only Priority Mail Express may arrive that day for the premium.
