September 7, 2026 is a dead day for your mailbox. That is Labor Day this year, and USPS treats it as a full closure like Thanksgiving or Christmas.
So does USPS deliver on Labor Day? Not regular mail, and not regular packages.
There is one narrow exception. It involves paying extra ahead of time. Everything else, from a First-Class letter to a Ground Advantage box, waits until Tuesday.
Labor Day is not the same as a normal weekend gap. Our guide on whether USPS runs Saturday and Sunday routes covers that separate schedule. It helps to read both if you are planning around a weekend and a holiday in the same week.
Why the answer to does USPS deliver on Labor Day is always no
People ask does USPS deliver on Labor Day every single year, usually while staring at a stuck tracking number. The answer has not changed in decades.
Labor Day sits on the list of federal holidays USPS observes. It falls on the first Monday of September, which in 2026 is September 7.
Carriers do not run their routes. Trucks do not leave the plant for local delivery, and the window clerks get the day off too.
That covers every class of regular mail. First-Class Mail, Ground Advantage, Priority Mail, Media Mail, and standard packages all stay put. Delivery picks back up the next business day.
Post offices are closed too, along with the routes
Every retail post office closes on Labor Day. Window service and counter pickup pause for the day.
A locked outer lobby may still let you grab mail already sitting in your PO Box. That depends on the building.
Do not plan a Labor Day trip to mail a letter. Do not plan on picking up a held package at the counter either. Check USPS location hours for your specific office to see Tuesday’s reopening time.
Not sure whether today counts as one of these closure days at all? Our USPS open today lookup settles that in a few seconds.
The one exception: Priority Mail Express
Priority Mail Express is the one USPS service that can run on a holiday. USPS says Sunday and holiday delivery is available in many major markets for an added fee. That option still exists in 2026 for shippers willing to pay for it.
Here is the catch. Holiday delivery on Priority Mail Express is not automatic. A shipper has to request and pay the Sunday and Holiday Delivery Premium ahead of time.
Skip that add on, and a Priority Mail Express package addressed for Labor Day just waits like everything else. It delivers the next business day instead. Nobody warns you of this at checkout unless you dig for it.
USPS also limits where this option works. The holiday premium is only offered in select ZIP codes, mostly dense metro markets where USPS already runs a holiday crew. Plenty of suburban and rural ZIP codes are not eligible no matter what you pay.
The exact fee and the eligibility check live in our breakdown of Priority Mail Express Sunday and holiday delivery. The mechanics are identical for Sundays and federal holidays alike.
What happens to mail already in transit on Labor Day
A package already moving through the network does not disappear on Labor Day. Sorting facilities keep running behind the scenes. Scans like arrived at USPS facility or in transit can still post through the holiday.
What stops is the last mile, meaning the actual delivery to your mailbox or your door. A status stuck on out for delivery through Labor Day is normal, not a red flag. USPS can mark a package out for delivery the night before a Tuesday drop.
Start worrying if a package shows zero movement two full business days after Labor Day. No scan since before the holiday is the real warning sign.
At that point, call 1-800-275-8777. Once seven business days have passed, you can file a Missing Mail search.
The Tuesday after Labor Day: expect a backlog
Every route that skipped Monday gets folded into Tuesday’s workload. Carriers deliver two days of mail on one route. That means heavier stops and later delivery times in a lot of areas.
A package due Monday under a normal estimate often lands Tuesday afternoon instead. Wednesday is not unusual either if the local office is short staffed.
Honestly, that is not a lost package. It is a one day backlog working itself out, and I would not spend a phone call on it.

UPS and FedEx on Labor Day, in short
UPS does not deliver on Labor Day either. Ground and air shipments pause, with no pickup or delivery service. Only UPS Express Critical keeps running, and that is built for urgent freight.
Check the UPS holiday shipping schedule before you count on a Monday drop.
FedEx closes FedEx Express and FedEx Ground for Labor Day too. FedEx Custom Critical is the narrow exception for urgent freight. FedEx Office counters run modified hours, which is not the same thing as the shipping network running.
| Carrier | Regular delivery on Labor Day | Any exception |
|---|---|---|
| USPS | No | Priority Mail Express, with the paid holiday premium, in eligible ZIP codes only |
| UPS | No | UPS Express Critical for urgent freight |
| FedEx | No | FedEx Custom Critical for urgent freight |
Bottom line
Does USPS deliver on Labor Day for a typical letter or package? No. Post offices close and carriers stay home, and everything resumes Tuesday.
The only way to get a Labor Day delivery is the paid Priority Mail Express holiday premium, in a ZIP code where USPS offers it. That is a deliberate, paid choice. It never happens by default.
Plan around the closure instead of fighting it. Ship a day earlier if a deadline matters. Use the postal holiday and delivery day checker to confirm which dates are affected before you pick a ship date.
