UPS does not deliver on Martin Luther King Jr. Day: Monday, January 19, 2026 is one of five full closures on its 2026 schedule, with no pickup or delivery. So if you are asking does UPS deliver on MLK day this year, the answer is no, and Tuesday is the first day packages move.
UPS marks Domestic Ground, Air and International service as closed. Its holiday page says “No UPS pickup or delivery service.” Here is what that means for your package.
Does UPS deliver on MLK Day 2026?
No, not on Monday, January 19, 2026. UPS lists this date as one of five full closures on its 2026 holiday schedule. The others are New Year’s Day, Independence Day, Labor Day and Christmas Day.
The closure covers Ground and Air packages, both domestic and international. Air Freight and Ocean Freight are closed too. A package due that Monday does not move at all.
UPS service status on Martin Luther King Jr. Day
Almost everything is closed, with one narrow exception. The table uses the UPS 2026 holiday operations schedule.
| Service | Status on Mon, Jan 19, 2026 |
|---|---|
| Domestic Ground | Closed, no pickup or delivery |
| Domestic and International Air | Closed, no pickup or delivery |
| International services | Closed |
| Air Freight and Ocean Freight | Closed |
| The UPS Store | Limited locations; each store is independently operated and may be closed |
| UPS Express Critical | Available through Marken |
Express Critical is a specialty time critical service, not regular parcel delivery. UPS lists it as available on every holiday. The number on its holiday page is 1-800-714-8779.
Why UPS is closed on Martin Luther King Jr. Day
The federal government observes the holiday on the third Monday of January. In 2026 the federal date is Monday, January 19, and in 2027 it is Monday, January 18. UPS does not follow every federal date, but it keeps this one.
That is why the same question gets different answers for different holidays. If you want to know whether UPS delivers on MLK Day, check the UPS schedule rather than assuming it matches USPS or a bank calendar.
Does UPS ship on Martin Luther King Jr. Day if I ask early?
You can build a label and schedule a shipment online at any time. UPS still will not collect it on the holiday. UPS does not say it will collect from a drop box that day either, so plan for the package to start moving once service resumes.
UPS does not publish a premium option that overrides the closure for ordinary Air shipments. If something must travel on that Monday, Express Critical is the only service its schedule lists as available.
What happens to a package due on MLK Day?
A package scheduled for Monday, January 19 moves to the next UPS business day. UPS lists Tuesday, January 20, 2026 as a normal day, so that is the first realistic delivery date.
Tracking should show the shift once the shipment is scanned again. Do not worry if the date has not changed on Sunday night. The scan history is the real record.
Does the holiday add a day to transit times?
UPS counts business days for Ground and Air, and the holiday is not a business day. A package that would have arrived Monday arrives later in the week instead. Use the delivery time estimator to compare a normal week with a holiday week.
UPS Ground Saver and Mail Innovations get a specific note. UPS says they need one additional business day in transit because of a federal USPS holiday, and it names Presidents Day, Indigenous Peoples Day and Veterans Day, the days UPS runs while USPS closes. It does not repeat that note under MLK Day because UPS itself is closed, so a Ground Saver package simply waits with everything else.
Normal versus when to worry
A one day shift is the expected result of the closure. A few signs call for action.
| What you see | Likely meaning | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Estimate moves to Tuesday, Jan 20 | Normal holiday shift | Wait |
| No new scan on Monday | Network closed | Check again Tuesday |
| No scan for two full business days after the holiday | Possible stall | Contact UPS with the tracking number |
| Status says delivery attempted on Jan 19 | Unusual for this closure | Contact UPS and the sender |
The thresholds are a practical rule of thumb, not a UPS commitment. If a time sensitive item is late, ask the sender to open a trace after the delay has run its course.
How MLK Day compares with other 2026 holidays
Not every federal holiday stops UPS. This table sets the federal date next to the UPS status for 2026.
| Holiday | 2026 date | UPS status |
|---|---|---|
| Martin Luther King Jr. Day | Mon, Jan 19 | Closed |
| Presidents Day | Mon, Feb 16 | Open across all services |
| Juneteenth | Fri, Jun 19 | Open across all services |
| Labor Day | Mon, Sep 7 | Closed |
| Veterans Day | Wed, Nov 11 | Open across all services |
The Presidents Day rules for UPS show the contrast.
For another full closure, see New Year’s Day delivery. The pattern is that UPS decides holiday by holiday, so the federal calendar alone does not tell you.
Does UPS deliver on MLK Day 2025 or 2027?
The 2026 date is the only one the current UPS schedule confirms. For 2027, the federal holiday is Monday, January 18. UPS has not yet published a 2027 schedule beyond New Year’s Day on January 1, 2027, so any claim about next year is a guess.
The same goes for 2025, which the current schedule no longer documents. Check the UPS holiday page before you ship in any other year. The postal holiday checker lists dates across carriers.
What about UPS stores, Access Points and customer service?
This article covers delivery, not retail counters. The UPS Store is independently owned, and UPS tells customers to check locally because stores may be closed. For the counter side, see whether UPS is open on MLK Day.
The same caution applies to UPS Access Points, whose hours come from the host retailer. A store being open does not mean UPS trucks are running. UPS lists weekday phone hours of 7am to 11pm ET on 1-800-742-5877 but publishes no holiday exception, so the line may or may not run a full Monday shift.
The days around MLK Day
UPS does not list Friday, January 16 or Tuesday, January 20, 2026 as holidays. Both are regular business days on its schedule. The closure is a single Monday, so the effect is one lost delivery day, not a long pause.
Weekend rules still apply as usual. A package that would normally wait over a weekend simply waits one more day.
People often ask whether the answer changes for a store pickup, a held package or a Customer Center. The short version is that does UPS deliver on MLK day is a question about trucks, and the answer for trucks is no. Anything you collect in person depends on the location and its host.
What to do if your package was due on MLK Day
Whether UPS delivers on MLK Day does not change what you can do online. Start with the tracking page, not the phone. If the status shows “In transit” or “Out for delivery” on Tuesday, you are on track.
If you are on a tight deadline, tell the sender early. Ask whether a faster service is worth the cost. For timing on that option, read about UPS Next Day Air.
For the normal weekly pattern, see the guide to UPS weekend delivery. Planning ahead around closures is the surest way to avoid a missed date.
Bottom line on UPS and Martin Luther King Jr. Day
UPS is closed for pickup and delivery on January 19, 2026, with Express Critical as the one listed exception. Treat Tuesday as the first delivery day. Confirm details on the UPS holiday shipping schedule before you ship.
