New Year’s Day delays mail by one business day, because USPS, UPS and FedEx all close on Friday, January 1, 2027. For UPS Ground, though, the pause starts a day earlier. That twist is the part most people miss when they ask does New Year’s Day delay mail.
USPS runs normally on New Year’s Eve and again on Saturday, January 2. So most USPS mail loses only the one day. UPS Ground packages can lose two delivery days or more.
New Year’s week, carrier by carrier
The three days around the holiday look very different depending on the label on your box.
| Carrier | Thursday, Dec 31, 2026 | Friday, Jan 1, 2027 | Saturday, Jan 2, 2027 |
|---|---|---|---|
| USPS | Normal delivery | Closed; Priority Mail Express only, select markets, for a fee | Normal Saturday delivery |
| UPS | Air and international Air deliver; Ground deliveries suspended; no Ground pickups | Closed | Not a full delivery day |
| FedEx | Modified Service | Closed | Open |
FedEx Office follows a similar pattern, with modified hours on December 31 and closed locations on January 1.
Does New Year’s Day delay mail more for UPS?
For Ground packages, yes. UPS suspends Ground deliveries on New Year’s Eve and closes on New Year’s Day. A Ground package that would have arrived on Thursday, December 31 can sit until the next full UPS delivery day.
For many addresses that is Monday, January 4, 2027. UPS does deliver some residential Ground packages on Saturdays, but coverage varies, so don’t count on January 2.
UPS Air is different. Next Day Air and 2nd Day Air still deliver on December 31. Air pickups that day happen only if they were arranged by December 28.
How much later will your USPS mail arrive?
One business day. USPS counts delivery windows in business days, which exclude Sundays and federal holidays.
Take a Ground Advantage package with a 2 to 5 business day window, shipped on Tuesday, December 29, 2026. Its last expected day would have been Monday, January 4. With New Year’s Day removed, that becomes Tuesday, January 5.
Letters work the same way. A card mailed on New Year’s Eve gets no pickup on January 1. It starts moving on Saturday, January 2.
Mailing on New Year’s Eve
December 31 is a regular USPS day, so mail handed in before the last collection starts moving that evening. Anything dropped in a blue box after the last pickup waits until Saturday. If the postmark date matters, hand the item to a clerk and ask for a receipt.
PO Box lobby access on postal holidays varies by location. If you plan to check a box on January 1, call your post office first.
For UPS, the cutoff is earlier than most people expect. With no Ground pickups on December 31, a Ground package dropped off that day is not collected until the next business day.
Why the first week of January feels slow
New Year’s Day lands right after the Christmas peak. Two short holiday weeks in a row leave little time for the networks to clear. Returns and exchanges then add a second wave of packages.
Winter weather plays a part too. Storms in the northern states can stack a weather delay on top of the holiday. When both happen in the same week, an extra day or two is common.
What your tracking shows over the holiday
Expect no movement on January 1 from any of the three carriers. A USPS item usually picks up scans again on Saturday. A UPS Ground package may show nothing new from December 30 until the following Monday.
That long gap is normal for UPS Ground in this one week. It reflects the suspended Ground day, not a lost package.
When a late package is normal and when to worry
Most people asking does New Year’s Day delay mail have something that should have arrived by now. Measure it against the adjusted window.
- Normal: a USPS item due on January 1 arrives on Saturday, January 2 or Monday, January 4.
- Normal: a UPS Ground package due on December 31 arrives on Monday, January 4.
- Worth checking: no new USPS scan by the end of Tuesday, January 5.
- Time to act: more than two business days past the adjusted estimate. For USPS, file a Missing Mail search, which opens 7 days after mailing.
To set a fair expectation, work out the usual transit time for your route, then remove the holiday.
New Year’s Day 2028 falls on a Saturday
January 1, 2028 is a Saturday. Federal holidays that land on a Saturday are observed on the Friday before, which would make Friday, December 31, 2027 the observed day.
USPS has not published its 2028 holiday list yet. Before you plan year end mailings for 2027, check the postal holiday calendar or our list of USPS holidays.
How to keep New Year’s from slowing your mail
- Mail checks and documents by Tuesday, December 29, so they move before the holiday.
- Ship time sensitive UPS packages by Air if they must arrive on December 31.
- Expect year end statements and tax forms mailed that week to arrive a day or two later.
- For a USPS delivery on January 1, Priority Mail Express offers holiday delivery in many major markets for an added fee.
USPS lists that option on its Priority Mail Express page. It covers delivery on the holiday, not pickup.
The bottom line
So, does New Year’s Day delay mail? It costs USPS and FedEx one business day, and USPS catches up on Saturday. UPS Ground is the exception, since its pause starts on New Year’s Eve and often runs to Monday.
