FedEx peak season runs in three demand surcharge periods from September 28, 2026 to January 17, 2027, which is the only official way FedEx marks when is peak season for FedEx. The most expensive stretch is November 23 to December 27, 2026.
The first period starts well before Thanksgiving, so peak pricing reaches your label earlier than the shopping calendar suggests. FedEx publishes surcharge periods instead of one peak date. The figures below come from the FedEx demand surcharges page, which tells shippers to check back often.
When is peak season for FedEx in 2026?
The domestic demand surcharge runs in three periods. Each period carries a different charge per package, and the middle one is the highest.
| Period | Dates | What changes |
|---|---|---|
| Period 1 | September 28 to November 22, 2026 | Demand surcharges begin at the lower rate |
| Period 2 | November 23 to December 27, 2026 | Highest rates of the season |
| Period 3 | December 28, 2026 to January 17, 2027 | Rates drop back to the Period 1 level |
Period 2 starts on Monday, November 23, the Monday of Thanksgiving week. It covers Black Friday, Cyber Monday and the run up to Christmas. Period 3 begins December 28 and keeps surcharges in place until mid January.
When does peak season start for FedEx?
The first surcharge period begins on September 28, 2026. It applies to these services:
- FedEx Ground and Home Delivery
- First Overnight, Priority Overnight and Standard Overnight
- 2Day A.M. and 2Day
- Express Saver
International shipments follow a separate calendar. FedEx lists adjusted demand surcharges for exports and imports effective September 21, 2026. It publishes them in their own documents.
The residential delivery charge starts later. FedEx lists twelve weekly periods from October 5, 2026 to January 17, 2027. That start date is still before November.
So a sender asking when does peak season start for FedEx gets three different dates. Those are September 21 for international, September 28 for domestic and October 5 for the residential charge.
Why does FedEx peak season matter for your shipping budget?
Knowing when is peak season for FedEx lets you price a shipment before the label is printed. A package that ships on the last day of Period 1 costs less in surcharges than the same package one day later. For a seller with many orders, that difference adds up fast.
The surcharge is per package, not per order. A three box order carries the charge three times.
What do the surcharges cost in each period?
FedEx prints a per package amount for each service group and period. The amounts below are the ones on the demand surcharges page.
| Charge | Sept 28 to Nov 22 | Nov 23 to Dec 27 | Dec 28 to Jan 17 |
|---|---|---|---|
| First, Priority and Standard Overnight | $1.30 | $2.55 | $1.30 |
| 2Day A.M., 2Day and Express Saver | $1.20 | $2.35 | $1.20 |
| Ground and Home Delivery residential | $0.50 | $0.80 | $0.50 |
| Ground Economy | $2.55 | $4.05 | $2.55 |
| Additional Handling | $8.80 | $11.85 | $8.80 |
| Oversize | $95.75 | $117.25 | $95.75 |
| Ground Unauthorized Package | $535 | $595 | $535 |
FedEx lists the overnight and 2Day rows for services other than One Rate. It describes Ground Economy as a contract only service, so most casual senders will never see that row.
The Additional Handling, Oversize and Unauthorized Package rows apply to U.S. package services and FedEx International Ground. They use the same three periods as everything else.
FedEx does not print a separate peak calendar for Additional Handling or Oversize. Any peak date you see for them elsewhere is not on the FedEx page.
How does the residential delivery charge work?
This charge is not fixed. FedEx says it adjusts dynamically each week, using a peaking factor that compares current volume with a June baseline.
The page shows amounts from $1.70 to $8.00 per package for Ground and Home Delivery, and $3.05 to $9.35 for the Express services, depending on the peaking factor tier.
There is a two week lag between the calculation and the week the charge applies. The charge targets large accounts. FedEx describes it as applying to enterprise customers that ship over 20,000 residential and Ground Economy packages a week.
A small business or a person shipping a few boxes will not see this charge on a label. They may still feel it indirectly if a large retailer passes the cost on in shipping fees or delivery timing.
Is the demand surcharge the same as a fuel surcharge?
No. The demand surcharge is a separate line that follows the three periods. The fuel surcharge is a different charge that adjusts weekly.
FedEx lists the Ground fuel surcharge at 29.00% for the week of September 21 to 27, 2026.
Both can appear on the same label. Read the full charge breakdown before you compare services.
Does peak season change who gets charged?
The label owner pays the surcharge. For an online order, the seller usually builds it into the shipping fee you see at checkout. For a prepaid label, the person who bought the label has already paid it.
Rates for contract accounts can differ from the table. The page lists the published amounts, so a business account should check its own agreement.
What peak season means for senders
Senders face higher label costs and a tighter schedule. The same box can cost more on November 24 than on November 20. The surcharge period changed in between.
- Check the label date. The charge follows the period in which the package ships. Moving a shipment from November 22 to November 23 raises the surcharge.
- Watch package size. Additional Handling goes from $8.80 to $11.85 in Period 2, and Oversize goes from $95.75 to $117.25.
- Ship before the deadline for your service. Cutoffs for each carrier are collected on the holiday shipping deadlines page.
A worked example
Take an Express Saver package shipped on November 20. The demand surcharge is $1.20 per package. Ship the same package on November 24 and the surcharge is $2.35.
That is $1.15 more for one box, from the calendar alone. Over a batch of 200 gift orders, the gap is $230.
Compare services before you pick one, since a surcharge can change which option is cheapest. The shipping cost comparison tool helps with that for the same package across carriers.
FedEx does not publish a statement of expected package volume that sets the busiest weeks. The surcharge periods are the only official dates. Plan around them, not around a rumored date.
What peak season means for receivers
Receivers should expect a crowded network. More parcels move through the same sort facilities and trucks.
FedEx does not publish peak delivery time changes. Its standard delivery hours are 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., so plan for the whole window.
Tracking is the best tool, so check it each morning. Use Delivery Manager to set a window if you will not be home.
Delivery Manager is free, and premium options start at $5.55.
Weekend delivery matters more at this time of year. FedEx Home Delivery runs every day including weekends, which is covered on the FedEx weekend delivery page. Standard FedEx Ground to businesses runs Monday to Friday.
Which holidays fall inside the peak window?
Several holidays sit inside the three periods. FedEx publishes a holiday operations schedule each year, and the 2026 holiday schedule PDF lists the status for each date.
| Date | FedEx status in the 2026 schedule |
|---|---|
| December 24, 2026 | Modified Service |
| December 31, 2026 | Modified Service |
| January 1, 2027 | Closed |
FedEx business days run Monday to Friday except Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day. Day by day answers are on the FedEx holidays page.
Two single day questions have their own pages:
- Black Friday delivery for the Friday after Thanksgiving
- Christmas Day delivery for December 25
How to plan around the peak dates
The calendar gives senders a clear plan. FedEx says to check its page frequently for the latest updates, so look again in early November. Move what you can into Period 1, keep Period 2 for time sensitive orders, and push the rest to Period 3.
- Ship gifts before November 23 if the box is large or heavy, so you avoid the higher Period 2 amounts.
- Pick a faster service only when the date truly needs it. Overnight services add a demand surcharge of $1.30 or $2.55.
- Pack to a standard size. Oversize boxes carry the biggest per package charge in the table.
- Track every shipment and set a delivery window through Delivery Manager.
- Ship non urgent parcels after December 27 if you can, since Period 3 amounts match Period 1.
Dates for other carriers differ. The postal holiday checker shows which days a carrier is closed.
Bottom line
So when is peak season for FedEx comes down to September 28, 2026 to January 17, 2027 in three surcharge periods, with the steepest charges from November 23 to December 27. Ship earlier, keep boxes standard, and use the surcharge page for any update.
