FedEx builds delivery changes around one free tool: FedEx Delivery Manager. Redirecting to a pickup location costs nothing. Redirecting to a different house almost always costs money.
That single split is the whole story of how to change delivery address FedEx allows for a package already in transit. This guide walks through what is free, what is paid, and what only the shipper can touch.
Sign up for FedEx Delivery Manager first
FedEx Delivery Manager is free to join at fedex.com. Once you register your address, it tracks every FedEx shipment coming your way automatically. No account number or invoice is required.
Signing up unlocks tracking alerts, a map view of your driver, and picture proof of delivery. Those three features cost nothing on any account.
Free option one: hold at a retail location
The simplest free redirect sends a package to a nearby retail spot instead of your door. FedEx supports thousands of locations for this, including Walgreens, Dollar General, and FedEx Office. There is no fee at all.
Request the hold before midnight the day before your scheduled delivery. Do that, and the package is usually ready for pickup the very next day. A secure location holds it for up to 7 days.
Signature required packages sometimes land here automatically anyway. A driver cannot always leave a package at your door. FedEx often reroutes it to the nearest eligible location on its own.
Free option two: a vacation hold
FedEx will pause every delivery to your address for up to 14 days at no charge. Set the date range in Delivery Manager before you leave. Normal delivery resumes on the first business day after the hold ends.
This is the easiest way to change delivery address FedEx offers when you simply will not be home at all. It stops deliveries rather than redirecting them somewhere else.
Paying to change delivery address FedEx by distance
Sending a package to a neighbor, a family member, or a second home costs money. FedEx sets the fee by distance from the original destination. Pricing starts at $5.55 per package and can run higher.
| Situation | Fee |
|---|---|
| New address within 120 miles of the original | $5.55 per package |
| Beyond 120 miles, delivered 1 day later | $33.50 per package |
| Beyond 120 miles, delivered 3 days later | $22.50 per package |
| Beyond 120 miles, via Ground or Home Delivery | $14.50 per package |
These prices come straight from FedEx and can vary by location. The final amount is confirmed only when you actually request the change.
Paid option: a specific delivery date or time
FedEx also lets you buy precision instead of a whole redirect. A window between 5 PM and 8 PM on your scheduled day costs $5.55. A 2 hour window up to 7 days after the original date costs $11.50.
Neither option changes where the package goes. Both simply narrow down when it shows up at the same address.
What only the shipper can do
A recipient using Delivery Manager can only redirect a shipment already in the FedEx network. A shipper controls everything before that package ever leaves the origin facility.
Only the shipper can correct a genuinely wrong address on the label itself. A missing suite number that was never entered falls in that same category. Only the shipper can cancel a shipment outright before pickup.
Delivery options can look restricted or missing in Delivery Manager. When that happens, the shipper likely locked changes on that package. Some shippers do this deliberately for high value freight.
Timing rules that actually matter
Redirect requests need to land before the package reaches its final sorting stage near your address. Once a driver has the package loaded for delivery, changes usually stop working.
The retail hold request has its own tighter deadline. Submit it by midnight the day before delivery, or the package may already be out on the truck.
A vacation hold needs a bit more lead time than a same day redirect. Set it a day or two before you actually leave, not the morning you walk out the door.
Vacation hold versus a one time reroute
A vacation hold is the right tool for an extended absence. It pauses every package heading to your address for a set stretch of time.
A one time reroute or retail hold fits a single package instead. Use that when you just need one shipment to land somewhere other than your door today.
What to do about a missed delivery
A door tag means FedEx already tried once. Delivery Manager lets you look up that specific package and choose what happens next.
You can request another attempt, redirect it to a retail location, or reject the shipment entirely. All three options are available straight from the door tag lookup.
Sometimes a status update raises a bigger question than a simple missed attempt. Our guide on what a FedEx delivery exception actually means covers the other common tracking messages you might see instead.
Where to make the change
Everything above happens inside one account. FedEx Delivery Manager sign up page is free and takes only a few minutes to set up.

The bottom line
To change delivery address FedEx gives you two free paths and two paid ones. Hold at a retail location and vacation holds cost nothing. Rerouting to a new house or locking in a delivery window carries a fee that starts at $5.55.
Only the shipper can fix a genuinely wrong address before the package ships. Everything else runs through the free FedEx Delivery Manager account, as long as you request it before the package is already out for delivery.
