UPS does not publish one flat price for overnight shipping, so how much is overnight shipping UPS depends on the service, the weight, the distance and the surcharges on your shipment. The only honest way to get a number is to price your own package on UPS.com or at a UPS counter. Anyone quoting a single universal figure is leaving out the inputs that move it.
This page explains what sets the price, which of the three overnight services fits your shipment, and how to avoid paying more than you need to. It does not quote dollar amounts, because UPS does not post a current public table that applies to everyone.
How much is overnight shipping UPS offers across three services
UPS sells overnight delivery as three Next Day Air services. They differ by delivery time, by where they serve, and therefore by price. The details below come from the UPS domestic services page.
| Service | Where it serves | Saturday delivery |
|---|---|---|
| Next Day Air Early | 48 contiguous states and Anchorage | Available |
| Next Day Air | All 50 states and Puerto Rico | Available |
| Next Day Air Saver | From all 50 states to the 48 contiguous states | Not listed |
Next Day Air is a guaranteed next day service with a defined delivery time. Early is the fastest of the group, and Saver is the tier UPS lists without Saturday delivery, so it suits packages that can arrive later in the day. For delivery times and the guarantee, see our guide to UPS Next Day Air.
What decides how much to overnight with UPS
UPS prices a package from a handful of inputs. Change any one of them and the quote changes. The UPS rate guide lists these as the main drivers.
- Service level: Early costs more than standard Next Day Air, which costs more than Saver.
- Weight: UPS rate tables step up by pound, so a 10 pound box costs more than a 1 pound box.
- Zone: Zones measure distance between the origin and destination ZIP codes. A longer trip lands in a higher zone.
- Surcharges: Residential delivery, delivery area and fuel surcharges are added on top of the base rate.
Two shipments of the same weight can price very differently if one goes across town and the other crosses the country.
Dimensional weight can raise the price
UPS bills the greater of actual weight and dimensional weight. The 2026 UPS Rate and Service Guide for retail rates, updated September 7, 2026, says to divide the cubic size in inches by 166 for domestic packages and 139 for export, so a large light box can be billed like a heavy one. This catches people shipping pillows, clothing and other bulky items by air.
Measure length, width and height before you pick a box. Our dimensional weight calculator shows which weight you are likely to be billed on. A smaller box is often the easiest way to cut an overnight quote.
Fuel and how much overnight shipping ups charges
The fuel surcharge is not fixed. UPS sets it by index and adjusts it weekly, effective Mondays, and it can change without notice. Air services such as Next Day Air follow a Gulf Coast jet fuel price, while Ground follows diesel.
That means the same package can cost slightly different amounts in two different weeks. The UPS fuel surcharge page shows the current percentages and a 90 day history.
Can UPS overnight a letter?
Yes. UPS ships documents and letters by air, and its rate guide prices letters separately from packages. A flat envelope skips the per pound steps and the dimensional weight formula, which is why the letter line is the one to price first for documents.
A letter sent as Next Day Air still carries the same service rules, including the delivery commitment and any surcharges that apply to the address. Check the final quote before you pay. UPS also prohibits shipping some paper items, such as postage stamps and currency, so confirm what is inside the envelope.
Choosing between Early, standard and Saver
Pick Early only when the recipient needs the package first thing in the morning. Legal filings, medical items and time sensitive contracts are common examples. Early reaches fewer places, so check the destination ZIP code first.
Standard Next Day Air suits most urgent parcels and is the only overnight tier that serves all 50 states and Puerto Rico. Saver fits shipments that must arrive tomorrow but not at a specific early hour. If the recipient is at a business, a later delivery time often costs them nothing.
Remember that overnight means the next business day in most cases. A package handed over late on a Friday will not arrive Saturday unless you pay for Saturday delivery on a service that offers it. Weekend and holiday gaps are the most common reason an overnight package arrives later than expected.
Retail rates versus account rates
UPS publishes two 2026 rate guides for the U.S. 48 states, Alaska and Hawaii: Retail Rates, which apply when you walk into a store or ship without an account, and Daily Rates for account holders. Businesses with a UPS account can also negotiate volume discounts, and UPS does not publish the size of that gap, so there is no safe percentage to quote.
If you ship overnight often, an account is worth pricing out. If you ship once or twice a year, compare the quote against other carriers first with the shipping cost comparison tool.
How to find out how much is overnight shipping UPS will charge you
- Weigh the package and measure its length, width and height.
- Start a shipment on UPS.com and enter both ZIP codes.
- Select Next Day Air Early, Next Day Air or Next Day Air Saver and compare the totals.
- Check whether the address is residential, since that adds a surcharge.
The quote screen shows the final total before you commit. If you need the label itself, see how to create a UPS shipping label.
Ways to pay less than overnight
If the package does not truly need to arrive tomorrow, a slower service can cut the cost sharply. UPS 2nd Day Air delivers in two business days, and Ground takes one to five business days. Read what UPS 2nd Day Air offers for the middle option.
UPS also sells Flat Rate Shipping with five packaging tiers and four speed options. It uses your own packaging, and our page on UPS Simple Rate covers how that works.
For general price factors across every service, see how much it costs to ship a package with UPS.
Hidden costs that show up at checkout
The base rate is only part of the total. Delivery to a home counts as residential, and UPS adds a surcharge for it. Rural and remote ZIP codes can trigger a delivery area surcharge.
Extras such as declared value, signature options and a scheduled pickup also add to the bill. Pickup carries an extra fee, while dropping the package at a UPS location does not. Read the line items on the quote before you confirm.
Limits that affect overnight shipments
UPS air services accept packages up to 150 pounds and 108 inches in length. A package that exceeds those limits cannot go as Next Day Air at all. Saturday delivery is offered on Early and standard Next Day Air, and the quote screen shows any Saturday charge before you pay.
Packaging matters too. A box that is too big raises dimensional weight, and one that is too weak risks damage. Our guide to UPS shipping boxes explains what UPS supplies and what you buy.
The bottom line on UPS overnight cost
The answer to how much is overnight shipping UPS charges is always specific to the package. Your total comes from the service you pick, the weight or dimensional weight, the zone and the surcharges. Price the exact package on UPS.com, compare the three Next Day Air tiers, and drop to 2nd Day Air if tomorrow is not essential.
