Does USPS deliver on MLK Day? No: regular mail and packages do not arrive on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Monday, January 18, 2027, and the 2026 holiday (Monday, January 19) has already passed.

MLK Day is a federal holiday, so ordinary letters, Ground Advantage parcels and Priority Mail wait until the next delivery day. A few premium options work differently, and carriers other than USPS follow their own calendars.

Does USPS deliver on MLK Day in 2027, and what about 2026?

The federal holiday is the third Monday of January. The Office of Personnel Management lists it as January 19, 2026 and January 18, 2027. USPS lists MLK Day on its published holiday calendar, and the Postal Service treats federal holidays as non delivery days for regular mail.

The USPS events page currently lists the 11 holidays for 2026 and has not yet posted a 2027 list. The 2027 date here comes from the federal holiday calendar that USPS follows, so expect it to appear unchanged when the Postal Service publishes its schedule.

That means your carrier will not walk the route on Monday. Mail that would have arrived that day shows up on Tuesday, January 19, 2027, at the earliest. Mail that was already behind schedule can slip further.

Which services deliver and which do not?

The table below sorts the main services for the next holiday, Monday, January 18, 2027. Priority Mail Express is the only USPS service with a path to holiday delivery.

Service Delivery on MLK Day
Letters and cards (First-Class Mail) No regular delivery
USPS Ground Advantage No regular delivery
Priority Mail No regular delivery
Media Mail and Package Services No regular delivery
Priority Mail Express Possible in many major markets for an added fee
UPS No pickup or delivery service
FedEx Modified service in 2026; 2027 not published

Packages follow the same rule as letters. Ground Advantage and Priority Mail parcels wait for Tuesday.

For parcels, the only exception is Priority Mail Express, covered next.

How does Priority Mail Express work on the holiday?

USPS describes Priority Mail Express as a 1 to 3 day service with delivery by 6 PM and a money back guarantee. It operates every day of the year with limited exceptions. Sunday and holiday delivery is offered in many major markets for an additional fee.

The Sunday and holiday delivery fee is $12.50 in Notice 123, the July 12, 2026 price list. It is added on top of the Priority Mail Express postage. You select it when you ship, and it is not available everywhere.

The wording matters. USPS does not promise holiday delivery to every address. If your destination is outside a major market, the piece may wait until the next delivery day.

Ask the retail clerk to check your ZIP Code before you pay the fee. The same fee logic is covered in the guide to Priority Mail Express Sunday delivery.

What happens to a package due on MLK Day?

Does USPS deliver on MLK Day for packages? No, so a package scheduled for Monday, January 18, 2027 normally moves to Tuesday, January 19, and tracking may show a later expected date or no new scan for a day. That is common around any federal holiday and is not by itself a sign of loss.

USPS does not publish a simple rule for how holidays are counted inside Ground Advantage or Priority Mail delivery estimates. Treat the estimate shown at checkout as a target, not a promise. For the usual timing of Ground Advantage, see how long USPS Ground Advantage takes.

What does the MLK weekend look like day by day?

Planning is easier with the full weekend in view. Here is the 2027 holiday weekend for regular USPS service. Priority Mail Express with the holiday option is the exception.

Date Regular USPS delivery
Friday, January 15, 2027 Normal delivery
Saturday, January 16, 2027 Normal delivery, since USPS counts Saturday as a delivery day
Sunday, January 17, 2027 No regular delivery
Monday, January 18, 2027 (MLK Day) No regular delivery
Tuesday, January 19, 2027 Delivery resumes

So a parcel that misses Saturday can wait until Tuesday. That is a three day gap for the same package.

What should you do if your package was due that day?

  1. Wait until the end of Tuesday, January 19, 2027 before worrying. Federal holiday weekends add a day to most transit times.
  2. Open USPS Tracking and look for a new expected delivery date or a “Delivered” scan.
  3. If tracking has not moved for several business days, start a Help Request on usps.com with the tracking number.
  4. If the sender used Priority Mail Express and it was not delivered on time, ask about a refund under the money back guarantee.

If you are the sender and need to stop or redirect a parcel, Package Intercept costs $19.45 per piece in Notice 123 and covers domestic items with a tracking barcode. Start it before the parcel reaches the final delivery step.

Notice 123 also sets refund rules for Priority Mail Express postage and the Sunday and holiday premium fee. If the piece misses its service standard, ask USPS about both refunds, and keep your receipt and tracking number.

Is the Post Office open when USPS does not deliver on MLK Day?

Retail counters are closed on the holiday, and that is a separate question from delivery. The full breakdown of counters, lobbies and PO Box access is in is USPS open on MLK Day.

Blue collection boxes are not emptied either. USPS states in its holiday operating schedule that blue collection boxes are not serviced on Sundays or federal holidays. A letter dropped in a box on Saturday afternoon after the last pickup, or any time Sunday or Monday, waits for the first collection on Tuesday, January 19, so read the collection time printed on the box label before you rely on it.

Do UPS and FedEx deliver on MLK Day?

UPS lists MLK Day, January 19, 2026 and January 18, 2027, as “No UPS pickup or delivery service.” Franchise UPS Store locations set their own hours, so check with the store. See whether UPS delivers on MLK Day for the full picture.

FedEx listed MLK Day 2026 as modified service and has not yet published its 2027 holiday schedule. Details are in the FedEx MLK Day guide.

A carrier running does not change your USPS date. Each company sets its own holiday calendar, so check the carrier that holds your package.

How does MLK Day compare with other holidays?

USPS treats the federal holidays alike. Presidents Day follows about a month later, on February 15, 2027 according to the federal calendar. The same no delivery rule applies, and the Presidents Day delivery guide walks through it.

Weekends are different. USPS delivers packages on Saturday, and regular Sunday delivery does not run.

Read the weekend delivery rules to see how a holiday Monday changes the week.

A worked example with the holiday fee

Say you ship a Priority Mail Express Flat Rate Envelope. The retail price is $35.90 in Notice 123. Adding the $12.50 Sunday and holiday delivery fee brings it to $48.40.

Whether the fee is worth it depends on the recipient. If the ZIP Code is in a covered market and the item is urgent, it can be. If not, a regular shipment that arrives Tuesday costs less.

Plan ahead with a holiday checker

Use the Postal Holiday Checker to see the next closure before you ship.

If a parcel must arrive by the Friday before MLK Day, send it a few days earlier than normal. If it can wait, mail it after the holiday and skip the extra fee.

Bottom line on MLK Day mail

Does USPS deliver on MLK Day? Not for regular mail: nothing ordinary is delivered on January 18, 2027, and Tuesday is the catch up day. Priority Mail Express is the lone USPS option for holiday delivery, and only in many major markets for $12.50 extra, while UPS has published a full closure for the same day.
