Does UPS take USPS packages? No, not for a standard drop off. A UPS driver, a UPS drop box, and a UPS Store counter are all built around UPS’s own tracking numbers, not a USPS label.
The confusing part is that UPS and USPS do work together on certain services. It just never runs in the direction most people expect.
This guide separates the plain no from the real exceptions. It also covers what actually happens if a USPS package ends up in the wrong hands.
Does UPS take USPS packages: the short answer
Does UPS take USPS packages at a standard drop off? No. USPS and UPS are separate companies.
Each runs its own sorting facilities, its own trucks, and its own tracking systems.
Neither system is built to read the other’s barcodes. A UPS scanner cannot process a USPS tracking number. A UPS driver has no reason to carry a USPS labeled parcel back to a UPS facility.
The two networks exist to compete with each other. They do not exist to hand off retail packages on request.
Why the two networks do not mix
Each carrier sorts, scans, and routes packages through its own regional hubs. A package that enters the wrong network at the start has to be spotted as a mismatch.
Someone then has to manually redirect it. That process is slow by nature and inconsistent from store to store.
Neither company is obligated to move a competitor’s package through its system for free. Handling it at all is a courtesy, not a rule.
The confusing exception: UPS mail innovations and ground saver
UPS does use USPS, but only on UPS’s own outbound shipments. It never applies to a package you hand USPS to ship yourself.
UPS Ground Saver, formerly called SurePost, ships through UPS’s own network first. UPS then hands qualifying packages to USPS for the final mile to a home address or PO box.
UPS Mail Innovations works on a similar principle for business shippers. It uses USPS’s delivery network to finish a trip that started as a UPS shipment. Both arrangements move packages from UPS toward USPS, never the other way around.
UPS and USPS actually ended their Ground Saver partnership in early 2025. Cost and service disagreements drove the split.
A renewed deal then started sending some Ground Saver volume back through USPS again. Deliveries under the new agreement began in January 2026, with volume increasing through the year.
None of that history changes the answer for a package you want to send by USPS yourself. UPS’s own Ground Saver page confirms the handoff only runs on UPS shipments. UPS still will not accept your USPS package at drop off.
When some UPS store locations accept a USPS package anyway
A handful of UPS Store franchises will take a prepaid USPS package as a walk in courtesy. They hold it for the next USPS carrier stop at that store.
This is not a UPS or USPS policy. It is an individual store choosing to help a customer, and it varies location to location.
Real seller reports describe exactly this pattern. A prepaid USPS Priority Mail package dropped at a UPS Store sat with no tracking scan for over a day. Nothing moved until the regular USPS carrier picked up mail at that address the next business day.
Do not count on a receipt, a scan, or a guaranteed pickup date if a store agrees to hold a USPS package this way. Call ahead and ask directly whether the store does this before relying on it for anything time sensitive.
What happens if you drop a USPS package in a UPS box
A staffed UPS Store counter is different from an unattended UPS drop box. The self serve box gets emptied on a schedule built around UPS barcodes.
Nobody is standing there to notice a USPS label that does not belong. A USPS package left in a UPS drop box can sit for days with no scan and no owner.
USPS has no routine reason to check UPS collection boxes. Forwarding it onward is a goodwill favor if a UPS employee happens to notice it, never a guaranteed outcome.
If you realize the mistake quickly, go back to the location in person. Ask staff to check the box while the package is still likely there. Waiting and hoping tends to cost more time than it saves.
Where USPS packages actually need to go
A blue USPS collection box, a post office counter, or a scheduled home pickup through USPS.com are the reliable options. All three come from USPS directly.
Some UPS Store locations also handle official USPS mail services on site. That list can include Priority Mail and Certified Mail, processed through the same USPS partnership discussed above.
Our guide to shipping a package through USPS covers every one of those drop off points in detail. If your package should have shipped with UPS instead, our separate walkthrough of packing and dropping off a UPS shipment covers that side.
A UPS Access Point location is often a faster fix than a full UPS Store visit for a UPS shipment specifically. PO box shipments follow their own rules too.
Our breakdown of whether UPS delivers to PO boxes explains why a UPS labeled package still cannot reach a box that only USPS can open.
The bottom line
Does UPS take USPS packages? No, not as a standard drop off. The two carriers run separate networks that are not designed to swap packages on request.
The real exceptions run the other direction. UPS hands selected packages to USPS for final delivery through Ground Saver and Mail Innovations, never the reverse.
A store level courtesy might hold a stray USPS package for pickup, but nothing guarantees it. When in doubt, use USPS’s own drop off points for a USPS package.
