FedEx is a private, publicly traded delivery company based in Memphis, Tennessee, and it is not owned by the federal government. What is FedEx in practice? It is a carrier that moves packages by air and ground, from overnight letters to heavy boxes, and sells those services to businesses and households.
The name confuses people because “Federal” sits in the old company name. This guide covers who owns FedEx, what its services do, how a package moves, and where you can drop one off.
What is FedEx and who owns it?
FedEx Corporation trades on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker FDX. Shareholders own it, not any government.
Frederick W. Smith founded Federal Express Corporation in 1971 in Little Rock, Arkansas, and the company began operations in Memphis on April 17, 1973, with 389 team members, according to the FedEx history page.
Raj Subramaniam is the current president and CEO. FedEx says it made 186 deliveries on its first night and now handles about 17 million a day.
That answers several common questions at once. FedEx is a private company, because private here means not run by the state. It is also a public company in the stock market sense, because anyone can buy its shares.
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Is FedEx government owned? | No. It is a publicly traded company, ticker FDX. |
| Is FedEx a federal company? | No. “Federal” is part of its history, not its ownership. |
| Is FedEx privately owned? | It is owned by private shareholders, not by one person or family. |
| Where is it based? | Memphis, Tennessee. |
| Who runs it? | Raj Subramaniam, president and CEO. |
The United States Postal Service is the separate government agency that delivers mail. FedEx competes with it, and the two are not the same organization.
Is FedEx a courier?
Yes. A courier is a company that picks up items, carries them to a destination, and delivers them. FedEx does exactly that, and it adds tracking and delivery time commitments on many services.
People also call it a carrier, a shipping company, or a logistics company. All of those describe the same business. The industry is transportation and delivery, and FedEx works in parcel shipping, freight, and online retail services.
What type of business is FedEx?
FedEx is a transportation company with several service lines. Its investor pages describe a broad portfolio of services, and most of its customers use two or more of them.
The company also says its strategy is to compete collectively, operate collaboratively, and innovate digitally. It describes a long term plan called Network 2.0 to combine its pickup and delivery networks.
One big change happened in 2026. FedEx completed the spin off of FedEx Freight on June 1, 2026. FedEx Freight is now its own public company on the NYSE as FDXF, and it handles less than truckload freight.
FedEx Corp. keeps the FDX ticker. The FedEx announcement has the full terms.
So when you read older pages that list FedEx Freight as part of FedEx, the date matters. Parcel shipping, the kind this guide covers, stayed with FedEx Corp.
What FedEx services can you ship with?
FedEx sorts its parcel services by speed. Faster services cost more, and the choice mostly comes down to when the package has to arrive. The table below uses the delivery windows on FedEx’s own shipping services page.
| Service | Speed | Delivery window |
|---|---|---|
| First Overnight | Next business day | Morning, 8 to 9:30 a.m. in most areas |
| Priority Overnight | Next business day | By 10:30 a.m. to businesses, noon to homes |
| Standard Overnight | Next business day | By 5 p.m. to businesses, 8 p.m. to homes |
| 2Day A.M. | 2 business days | By 10:30 a.m. to businesses |
| 2Day | 2 business days | By noon to homes |
| Express Saver | 3 business days | By afternoon to businesses, evening to homes |
| Ground | 1 to 5 business days | Businesses |
| Home Delivery | Residential service | Delivers every day of the week |
First Overnight can extend to 2 p.m. in some locations. Check the exact time for your ZIP code before you promise a date to anyone.
Overnight, 2Day, and Express Saver
The overnight tiers differ by time of day, not by days. Pay more for First Overnight if the package must arrive early. Choose Standard Overnight if the end of the business day is fine.
Overnight packages can be up to 150 lb. They can be up to 119 in long, and up to 165 in length plus girth. FedEx delivers overnight Monday through Friday, with Saturday delivery in select areas for an extra charge.
Ground and Home Delivery
Ground is the economical choice when the package can take up to 5 business days. Home Delivery is the residential version, and it delivers every day of the week.
Delivery times depend on your address type, so check the window for your ZIP code.
One Rate
FedEx One Rate is a flat rate option. It covers packages up to 50 lb anywhere in the U.S. on expedited services.
It helps when you do not want zone based pricing for a heavy box.
Ground Economy and SmartPost
FedEx Ground Economy is the low cost residential option, and FedEx states on its service page that FedEx SmartPost has been renamed FedEx Ground Economy. Delivery typically takes 2 to 7 business days, Monday through Sunday, and packages can weigh up to 70 lb and measure up to 130 in in length plus girth, with 1 to 10 lb the ideal weight.
It is a contractual service, so you set it up through a FedEx account representative rather than at a counter. Returns can be tendered through the Postal Service, including a mailbox or post office drop. The old name still shows up in tracking pages, and our guide to what FedEx SmartPost is covers how that service works.
How does FedEx work from pickup to doorstep?
A FedEx shipment follows a simple chain. The details differ by service, but the order stays the same.
- You create a label online, at a FedEx location, or through a business account.
- FedEx collects the package from you, or you take it to a drop off point.
- The package is scanned and sent to a FedEx facility for sorting.
- It travels toward the destination by air or by truck, depending on the service.
- A local facility sorts it again and loads it onto a delivery vehicle.
- The driver delivers it, and the tracking page shows the result.
Each scan updates tracking. When the status says the package is on a FedEx vehicle, it is out on its final route.
FedEx Delivery Manager adds control after the label is made. It offers a dynamic map view of the package and driver location, with precise arrival estimates. The FedEx page does not say which shipments qualify, so treat the map as available when it appears.
Delivery Manager lets you ask for a 5 to 8 p.m. window on the scheduled day for $5.55. A 2 hour window up to 7 days later costs $11.50.
Notifications by email, text, phone, and app are free, and so is a vacation hold up to 14 days. The Delivery Manager page lists the current options.
Where can you drop off or print for FedEx?
FedEx has more than one kind of location, and they do not all offer the same help. The most common are staffed FedEx stores, drop boxes, and partner retail counters called FedEx OnSite.
| Location type | What it does | Limits |
|---|---|---|
| FedEx OnSite | Drop off, pickup, label creation and printing, and packing help at select locations | Packages 55 lb or less |
| FedEx Drop Box | Drop off for prepared packages | Items up to 20 x 12 x 6 in |
| Retail pickup through Delivery Manager | Redirect a package to Walgreens, Dollar General, or FedEx Office, free | Set up before delivery |
FedEx OnSite partners include Walgreens, Dollar General, Office Depot and OfficeMax, Walmart, PakMail, Postal Annex, and PostNet, per the FedEx OnSite page.

How do you pick the right FedEx service?
Start with the date, not the price. Every service on the ladder is a promise about when the package lands, so the first question is how many days you can spare.
| Your situation | Service to look at | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A contract or document needed first thing tomorrow | First Overnight | Morning delivery in most areas |
| A business package needed tomorrow morning | Priority Overnight | By 10:30 a.m. to businesses |
| A gift needed tomorrow, evening is fine | Standard Overnight | By 8 p.m. to residences |
| A home delivery in two days by midday | 2Day | By noon to homes |
| A few days of slack and a lower cost | Express Saver | 3 business days |
| No rush and a heavier box | Ground or Home Delivery | 1 to 5 business days |
Address type matters in that table. A business address gets an earlier commitment than a home on the same service. If your recipient works from home, ask which type FedEx treats the address as.
Check the days, not only the speed
Business days exclude Sunday and holidays. A package sent on Friday under a 2 business day service does not arrive on Sunday. Plan around the calendar before you pay for speed.
Holidays add one more wrinkle. If you ship near one, read whether FedEx delivers on Christmas Day before you choose.
What affects the price
FedEx does not publish one price for every box. Three things drive the cost, according to its overnight shipping page.
- The delivery time commitment, where a later commitment costs less.
- The distance, or zone, between the sender and the recipient.
- The weight, where the greater of actual or dimensional weight applies.
Dimensional weight surprises many shippers. A light box that is large can bill like a heavy one. Measure length, width, and height before you quote a price to a customer.
What should you do if a FedEx package is late or stuck?
Most delays are small. A package can sit in one status for hours while the driver finishes a route. Wait for the delivery window on your service to pass before you act.
| Situation | What it usually means | When to act |
|---|---|---|
| Status says on a FedEx vehicle | Package is out on its final route | The delivery window for your service has passed |
| Overnight package missed its window | Check tracking for an exception | The commitment time has passed with no update |
| Ground package at 5 business days | That is the top of the published range | The sixth business day arrives with no scan |
The 5 day figure comes from the published 1 to 5 business day range for Ground. If tracking shows no movement past that range, contact FedEx with your tracking number.
A confusing status is easier to read with what a FedEx delivery exception means open beside it.
If you will be away, Delivery Manager has a free vacation hold of up to 14 days. A retail pickup redirect to Walgreens, Dollar General, or FedEx Office is also free.
Why use FedEx instead of another carrier?
The right carrier depends on the package. FedEx tends to make sense when you need a firm delivery window, when you are shipping overnight, or when the package is heavy.
- It offers morning, noon, and evening delivery commitments on its express services.
- One Rate gives a flat price up to 50 lb on expedited services.
- Home Delivery covers every day of the week for residential addresses.
- Delivery Manager lets recipients redirect, hold, or reschedule.
Price is the other half of the decision, and FedEx does not publish one price for everything. Rates change with delivery time, distance, and the greater of actual or dimensional weight. A FedEx account, One Rate, multiweight pricing, and FedEx Rewards can lower the cost.

How does FedEx compare with UPS and the Postal Service?
If you are still asking what is FedEx next to its rivals, the short version is that all three move parcels but run differently. FedEx and UPS are private companies. The Postal Service is a government agency.
| Carrier | Type | Ground style service | Heaviest standard package |
|---|---|---|---|
| FedEx | Publicly traded company | Ground, 1 to 5 business days to businesses | 150 lb on overnight services |
| UPS | Private package delivery company | Ground, 1 to 5 business days | 150 lb, up to 108 in long |
| Postal Service | Government agency | USPS Ground Advantage | 70 lb on Priority Mail and Ground Advantage |
The numbers match closely on the main ground service. Real differences show up in cost, pickup points, and delivery windows for your ZIP code. Those change by route, so compare quotes for the actual box.
FedEx One Rate and UPS Simple Rate both offer flat pricing up to 50 lb. FedEx applies One Rate to expedited services, and UPS Simple Rate prices by box size and stays within the United States.
Is FedEx a franchise?
FedEx’s pages describe retail partners that host FedEx OnSite services, and they describe staffed FedEx locations. They do not describe FedEx as a franchise system you can buy into. If you are asking because a local counter looks different from a FedEx store, check which kind of location it is.
The location page tells you which services the counter provides. That matters more than who runs the shelf space.
What extras does FedEx include?
A few features come with the service or with a free Delivery Manager profile. They are easy to miss because they sit outside the label screen.
- Picture Proof sends a visual confirmation of a drop off or documents a delivery attempt.
- Free packaging comes with overnight services, in 12 white options.
- A Saturday hold at a FedEx location is free on overnight shipments.
- Premium residential reroutes range from $5.55 to $33.50.
Savings tools exist too. A FedEx account, multiweight pricing, and FedEx Rewards are the ones FedEx lists for lowering shipping costs. Small shippers often skip the account and pay walk in prices, so ask what an account would change.
Keep the limits in mind before you pack. Overnight packages top out at 150 lb and 119 in in length. Packages at FedEx OnSite counters must be 55 lb or less, and Drop Box items must fit 20 x 12 x 6 in.
What is FedEx, in short?
FedEx is a publicly traded transportation company, not a government body, and it works as a courier with a ladder of services from first thing overnight to 5 day Ground. Since June 1, 2026, its freight business is a separate company, so the parcel network is what most shoppers deal with.
Pick the service by the date you need, check the delivery window for your address, and use the carrier comparison tool before you buy.
