$4.39. That is the media mail cost for a one pound package in 2026, at the counter, online, and in every zone.

No other USPS package class works that way.

This article sticks to the price. What it is by weight right now, what the extras add, and when Ground Advantage beats it or comes close. Also what a wrong guess about the contents costs you.

Our full media mail guide already covers what you can and cannot mail at this rate. This one stays on money.

Current media mail cost by pound (July 2026 rates)

USPS prices media mail on a flat national scale under Notice 123, effective July 12, 2026. There are no shipping zones involved. A one pound package to your neighbor costs the same as one going across the country.

Weight Media mail price
1 lb $4.39
2 lb $5.13
3 lb $5.86
4 lb $6.60
5 lb $7.34
10 lb $11.02
20 lb $18.39
30 lb $25.76
40 lb $33.13
50 lb $40.49
60 lb $47.86
70 lb $55.23

Seventy pounds is the maximum weight the class allows. Past the first pound, the price climbs about 74 cents per pound. Any fraction of a pound rounds up to the next full pound.

Confirm the exact figure for your package on the official Notice 123 price list before you buy postage. USPS has moved these numbers more than once in a single year.

Commercial versus retail: the one class where they match

Priority Mail, Ground Advantage, and Priority Mail Express all give you a discount for buying postage online. Media mail is the exception. Commercial pricing sits at the same $4.39 starting point as retail.

A seller printing a hundred labels a month through a shipping platform gets no volume break here. That stings a little if you are used to Ground Advantage commercial rates saving real money at scale. There is no trick to chase, so stop looking for one.

What the optional extras cost

Here is a fact that surprises people: basic USPS Tracking is included with media mail at no charge. You get a tracking number and delivery scans without paying anything extra. What the base rate does not include is insurance or any kind of signature.

Those stack on top of the table above at the standard extra service prices.

  • Standard shipping insurance is priced by declared value and starts at $2.80.
  • Signature Confirmation is available on media mail packages for $5.15 at the counter or $4.15 online.
  • Adult Signature Required is $9.70, and Adult Signature Restricted Delivery is $10.00.
  • Return Receipt runs $4.65 on paper or $2.91 by email. Certificate of Mailing is $2.45.
  • USPS Tracking Plus, which keeps your tracking history around longer, starts at $2.50. It is not the thing that gets you a tracking number.

The extra most sellers actually need is insurance. Ground Advantage bakes in $100 of coverage and media mail does not. Add $2.80 to a heavy media mail package and the price gap between the two classes gets thin fast.

Media mail cost versus USPS Ground Advantage

Ground Advantage includes USPS Tracking and $100 of insurance in its base rate. It delivers in two to five business days with no content restrictions.

USPS quotes media mail at two to eight days. In a busy season it can run past that. Nobody at USPS will apologize, because there is no service guarantee to break.

Our Ground Advantage breakdown covers speed and eligibility in full. On raw sticker price, media mail wins at almost every weight. Ground Advantage is priced by zone, and media mail is not.

That win narrows a lot once a package gets heavy and the destination is close.

Weight Media mail (flat) Ground Advantage commercial, zone 1 Ground Advantage retail, zone 1
1 lb $4.39 $9.04 $9.55
5 lb $7.34 $11.39 $12.95
10 lb $11.02 $14.50 $15.95
20 lb $18.39 $20.56 $22.75

Look at that twenty pound row. Media mail is still cheaper, but only by about two dollars against commercial Ground Advantage in the nearest zone.

Now add $2.80 of insurance to the media mail side so both packages are covered. Media mail lands at $21.19, which is more than the $20.56 commercial Ground Advantage price. At that weight and distance, the slower class actually costs more once you insure it.

My honest read: under five pounds shipped any real distance, media mail cost is not close. It wins by five dollars or more and there is nothing to debate.

Picture a box of twelve textbooks weighing about eighteen pounds, going to a buyer three states away. Media mail runs about $16.90. Ground Advantage commercial in a nearby zone lands somewhere around $19 to $20, insurance included.

Three dollars is not nothing. It is also not a reason to gamble on a slow, uninsured shipment for a sale you actually care about. Our Ground Advantage versus Priority Mail comparison covers the faster options separately.

Past fifteen or twenty pounds going somewhere nearby, I would pay the little extra for Ground Advantage. If your buyer cares about speed, that math tips toward Ground Advantage even sooner.

The price of getting it wrong

USPS can open a media mail package to confirm what is inside. The eligibility rules live in our dedicated media mail guide, not here. What belongs in a pricing article is what guessing wrong costs.

When contents do not qualify, USPS treats the piece as underpaid. It can charge postage due for the gap between what you paid and the correct rate for whatever class actually applies. That charge can land on the recipient at delivery, or the piece can come back to you.

Either outcome costs more than paying the right rate up front. Mail a phone case at the media mail rate to save four dollars. Your buyer can get a postage due bill at the door.

That is a bad way to end a sale. When an item is borderline, price it as Ground Advantage and skip the gamble.

Bottom line

Media mail cost starts at $4.39 for one pound and climbs on a flat national scale to $55.23 at seventy pounds. Commercial and retail pricing are the identical number. Tracking is included, but insurance and signatures cost extra.

Ground Advantage costs more up front. It includes insurance, ships faster, and closes the price gap almost entirely on heavy, close shipments.
