Does FedEx require signature? Not on every package. The sender picks the signature level when the label is created, and it can range from none at all to an adult with photo ID.
Some shipments always need a signature no matter what the sender chooses. That is why one box gets left on the porch and the next one sends the driver back for a second try.
Does FedEx require signature on every package?
It depends on the option on the label. The answer is fixed before the package ever ships. FedEx offers four levels, and the shipper, not the recipient and not FedEx, decides which one applies.
The recipient can still change what happens in some cases. That is covered in the sections on releasing a package and signing online below.
The four FedEx signature options
| Option | Who can sign | Extra fee | What it means |
|---|---|---|---|
| No Signature Required | No one needs to | None | The driver may leave the package. The shipper takes responsibility once it is left. |
| Indirect Signature Required | Someone at or near the address, such as a neighbor or building manager | $7.60 per package | The recipient can also authorize release without anyone present, or sign a door tag. |
| Direct Signature Required | Someone at the delivery address | $7.60 per package | FedEx reattempts delivery or holds the package at a location. |
| Adult Signature Required | A person 21 or older with a valid government photo ID | $10 per package | Electronic signatures are not accepted. |
The no signature option has no added fee, and FedEx says it is never applied automatically, so the shipper has to choose it. The other three carry a Delivery Signature Options surcharge that the shipper pays. FedEx’s 2027 surcharge and fee changes list the 2026 rates as $7.60 per package for Indirect and Direct and $10 for Adult, rising to $8.05, $8.15 and $10.60 on January 4, 2027.
What each option means for you in practice
When you wonder does FedEx require signature on your package, match the label to one of these cases. With No Signature Required, nothing is asked of you. The driver can leave the package, so check the spot where it was left before you report it missing.
With Indirect, you have the most flexibility. Anyone at or near the address can sign, and you can release it electronically.
With Direct, a person at the delivery address has to sign. Without one, FedEx reattempts delivery or holds the package at a location.
With Adult, the signer must be 21 or older and show a valid government photo ID. Neither a neighbor nor an electronic release will do.
Why do I need to sign for a FedEx package?
Usually because the sender asked for it. Sellers add a signature to protect higher value orders, and FedEx adds it by policy for regulated goods.
A signature gives the shipper proof that the package reached the right person. If you did not expect to sign, the seller most likely picked that option.
Which packages always require a signature?
Alcohol, pharmaceuticals, hazardous materials and firearms always require a signature by FedEx policy. The sender cannot waive it.
Alcohol, pharmaceuticals and firearms usually go out as Adult Signature Required. If your order is one of these, plan for someone aged 21 or older to be home with ID.
How to tell if a FedEx package requires a signature
People often ask when a signature is required for FedEx deliveries. The honest answer is that you cannot tell from the box alone.
Start with the tracking page. FedEx shows the delivery details there, and the shipper can also tell you which option was used.
FedEx does not publish a default signature level by service or declared value on its signature page. So there is no reliable rule such as “every package over a certain value needs a signature.” Ask the seller, or check the order confirmation.
FedEx Home Delivery is a service name, and its signature rules are not described on the official signature page. The same shipper choice applies, so check the label option instead of assuming.
Before you rely on a no signature drop, remember that the package may sit outside until you collect it. If the area is not secure, ask the seller about a signature option next time, or about holding it at a FedEx location.
Do you have to be home for a FedEx delivery?
Only for Direct and Adult Signature Required. With no signature, the driver may leave the package without you. With Indirect, a neighbor or building manager can sign for it.
If nobody is available, FedEx leaves a door tag. It lets you track the package, reschedule delivery or pick it up at a location, and on an Indirect shipment you can sign the back of the tag to authorize delivery on the next business day. A package held at a location may show an exception status, which this guide explains: what a FedEx delivery exception means.
Many shoppers also wonder whether FedEx makes you sign for packages that cost a lot. The official page ties the rule to the option and the contents, not to a price, although sellers often pay the $7.60 or $10 surcharge on expensive orders by choice. If a seller promises a signature free delivery, confirm it in writing.
Neighbors can be useful on Indirect shipments. Still, agree in advance who will accept it, because the package is then out of your hands until you collect it.
Can I leave a note or release the package?
Only on Indirect Signature Required shipments. Recipients can sign electronically through FedEx Delivery Manager, or sign the back of the door tag the driver leaves. The step by step is in how to sign for a FedEx package online.
Delivery Manager does more than release. FedEx lets you request a free hold at a nearby FedEx location for any shipment, and on No Signature or Indirect packages you can also redirect to another address or reschedule the delivery. Direct and Adult packages cannot be redirected that way, because the signature has to happen at the delivery address.
A handwritten note taped to the door is not an official release for Direct or Adult Signature Required packages. FedEx states that electronic signatures are not available for Direct and not accepted for Adult. For the full rules on the flexible option, read what indirect signature required means.
What to do if you missed a signature delivery
- Read the door tag. It lists your options to track, reschedule or pick up.
- If the package is Indirect, sign the tag or use Delivery Manager to authorize release.
- If it is Direct or Adult, arrange for a qualified person to be there, or collect it at the location where it is held.
- Bring a valid government photo ID for an adult signature pickup.
Do not wait too long on a held package. Ask the shipper whether a different delivery arrangement is possible.
Can I change the signature requirement?
Not as the recipient, because the shipper sets it on the label. The practical route is to contact the sender, or use the options FedEx offers on an Indirect shipment, such as Delivery Manager release.
If you need a package held somewhere safer, the door tag and a pickup location are your fallback. To plan around the delivery window, check what time FedEx starts delivering.
How to get proof of the signature
The proof of delivery and signature image is available on the FedEx tracking page or through customer support. This helps when a package shows as delivered and you do not have it.
If the signer is not someone you know, tell the sender and FedEx at once. The record shows what option applied, which helps sort out whether the driver followed it.
Compare the signer with your household or building before you file anything. For timing, try the delivery time estimator.
Bottom line on FedEx signatures
Does FedEx require signature every time? No. You sign only when the shipper chose a signature option or the contents force one.
When you control the shipping, compare services before you pay for extras with the shipping cost comparison tool.
